Posted - Sep 01 2009 : 8:04:18 PM Hi girls :)
A friend gave me a Canary melon from her garden and it is so good! I want to save the seeds to try and plant them next year. Any tips would be appreciated from this newer gardener :) Thanks ladies :)

Posted - Sep 16 2009 : 3:18:21 PM there is a good chance your friends melons could have crossed with other plants in her garden..you may or may not get a good melon from the seed
bloom where you are planted |

Posted - Sep 14 2009 : 03:31:35 AM Not sure really if the freezing is an absoulute necessity.
I have heard this will make the seeds grow better once they are planted.
We do both with a hodgepodge of all kinds of seeds, so I guess it may depend on where you have the best storage that can be vermin free.
One year we planted watermelon in one field and the old tyme pumpkins in another.
Watermelon all turned out ok, but some of the pumpkins had faint weird looking watermelon striping. Pumpkin pulp was still the same on the inside.
And I have also planted a very tiny crop of field corn mixed w/ silver queen sweetcorn. They came up looking like silverqueen on steroids. Perfect for feeding zoo animals.
Doing experiments like this be it on purpose or accidentally is kind of fun.
So why don't the yellow squash and zucchini cross. My FIL plants these side by side all the time. I can't eat the yellow and I'm always afraid they will cross and give me an unecpected tummy ache.

Posted - Sep 10 2009 : 8:42:41 PM Hi about saving seeds: If you had other melon or squash family near your Canary Melon the "birds and the bees" might have had their way with the pollen and you might get some very different melons next year. Last year I grew spaghetti squash and zuchinni. This year from my compost up came a squash plant, so I decided to let it grow. It has a spaghetti shaped squash with zuchinni stripes and is green instead of cream color.....I wonder what it will taste like...

Posted - Sep 08 2009 : 09:25:19 AM Thanks Anna,
Actually they are already dried. I washed them to make sure any melon residue was gone, patted them dry with a paper towel and laid them out on an old screen to dry. I can't believe how many there are! I hope they harvest true next year :) I didn't know that I should freeze them.
Thanks for your help!
Heather, I think some seeds you dry different.

Posted - Sep 08 2009 : 03:43:38 AM Spread the seeds in a pie pan to dry or spread out on a paper towel
When they are completely dry put them in a small glass jar, and place in the freezer 'till you want to plant for next spring
If these are heirloom they'll come back the same, if they are some kind of hybrid, you might get something that looks really different |
