I walked down to the mailbox today and was thrilled to see some daffodil points coming up! I planted about 150 of them last year in groups around the property. Hopefully we will have a pretty site soon!

Yes you can reuse the bulbs. What I do when I buy blubs in a pot is after they bloom, plant them where I want in the yard. Put a little bone meal in the hole with the bulbs before covering them up. I leave the stems on to get as much ultraviolet rays as possible from the sun, because that is what feeds them. Also I mark the area for next fall with some kind of stake so when they first start to come up I give them another dose of bonemeal to help them bloom again. This has always worked for me and they do bloom fine year after year.

I know this is a stupid question but I've got a lot to learn about gardening. I bought some daffys in a pot. They're done blooming. Can I re-use the bulbs? What should I do with them to get them ready and when do I plant them?

Thanks, fellow Daffy lovers,
Patricia

Here is the poem Jan. Enjoy.

Daffodils- William Wordsworth

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host of golden daffodils-
Along the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the Milky Way.
They stretched in ever-ending line
Along the margin of a bay;
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced, but they
Out did the sparkling waves in glee;
A poet could not but be gay
In such a jocund company.
I gazed and gazed, but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft when on my couch I lie,
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude,
And then my heart with pleasure fills
And dances with the daffodils

The planning is some of the most fun. What a thrill to have a clean slate to work with. If you are anything like me, you will be planning it and changing it forever. What fun.

I dont have any daffodils.(sniff~sniff) We just had our 1 year anniversary in the farm house and I didnt get any planted last fall...The yard was in terrible shape and took all I could do to remove weeds and work on the overgrown beds around the house. I am still planning my gardens..didnt want to plant in haste~~
Julia...Which poem is that?

I totally agree Jan. This morning, when I opened the curtians that open to my backyard, I smiled as I saw the daffodils bobbing in the wind, I said, "They are such happy flowers." I love the poem of Willam Wordsworth. If I were a poet, I would like to think I would write the same thing.

Can you tell I don't know much about flower gardening? I didn't realize they'd be "gone" by the time you mow. That makes sense. So the rest of the time grass grows where the bulbs are? I really need to get in the Master Gardener program & learn this stuff. I was supposed to attend this "semester", but there isn't going to be one in my area until next Fall at the earliest. Crud!

happymama,
I think the daffodils will bloom and be close to finished by the time a big mow needs to happen (I hope!)Otherwise, he'll have to leave that area alone until the bloom is over!Fortunately, he likes to see the spring flowers as much as I do, so there won't be any arguing! Some are by a big birch tree, some near a lilac, some in beds (which will be safe) and some are up on the ridge.
I took a walk up to the ridge where I mulched in six lavender plants as a test - I'm not sure they will grow in this area. They didn't look too healthy...

On my way to/from work every day I pass a gorgeous piece of property with a creek running through it. Every spring I have a treat when the daffodils come up. They are scattered in random groups in the huge yard of the home next to the creek and they border the creek in random groupings. Absolutely breath-taking!

But it also brings to mind a question that is probably really silly. If you have these groupings scattered throughout your yard, among the "lawn", how do you both keep them weeded and keep your dh from mowing them as they come up?
