I went out to the garden this morning to pick up weeding where I left off yesterday, only to find that about half of my corn had fallen over, leaning at a 45 degree angle.

At first I thought maybe pulling weeds yesterday had weakened the roots, but then I realized that the section I hadn't gotten to had many stalks leaning as well.

Around here the saying goes "Knee high by the fourth of July" but this corn is about thigh-high -- but then I'm short, so my thighs aren't all that elevated....

There's a good breeze blowing, but probably not strong enough to blow these over. Neither hubby or I heard any wind last night, and the stalks that fell over seemed to be random - one would be down, then two up, then two down, then one up.

I have a deer fence around my garden, so it PROBABLY wasn't deer.

I didn't notice any damage like racoons or other critters trying to eat it.

We've had a lot of rain this week, and I fertilized the corn this year with urea, so it is growing strong. Could it be too top-heavy?

At any rate, I propped it back up and piled dirt around the base of the plant - hopefully this is OK? Or should I stake it?

You shall eat the fruit of the labor of your hands - You shall be happy and it shall be well with you. -Psalm 128.2

Some of my corn is falling down too. The darn chipmunks have been digging it up for some reason. I sure hope they leave it alone now!

Too much water will make that happen here. I moved here from CAlif 7 years ago and was overwatering my corn the first year (the clay soil looked very dry to me!!) and my nieghbor finally told me not to water every day after it gets going good. I came from sandy soil where it MUSt be watered daily. It was still fine...hopefully yours will be too. I never staked mine.
