......planting for onions? I planted a 1/2 row of onions, but not all of them survived. What else can I plant in the bare spots of the row that won't hinder the onions that did make it?
I tried looking for the mavens area to ask this question, but didn't know where to find it.

According to my book "Carrots Love Tomatoes" it says that aside from all members of the Cabbage famliy, onions also like beets (as Kelly said), strawberries, tomatoes, lettuce, summer savory and a LITTLE BIT of Camomile. It also says that they DO NOT like peas and beans. It didn't specify if it was ALL beans, but I'm assuming that's what it meant.
We tried to plant cauliflower, broccoli and brussel sprouts next to a row of potatoes once and WHAT A DISASTER that was!!! Apparently all those plants are mortal enemies, each emmiting something that the other can't stand. We ended up with potatoes the size of those big marbles and the WEIRDEST looking broccoli and cauliflower on the planet. I don't remember what happened to the Brussel sprouts, but it all turned out UGLY. There really IS something to "Companion Planting." It's not just an "old Farmers wives tale!!!" Beets are good companions for onions. You can give that a try.
Jenny, I LOVE royal burgandy beans and plant them every year. They're so pretty on the vine, then when you cook them, they turn a beautiful dark green (darker and richer than regular green beans).

I have a couple short rows where the corn only came up sparsely so I need to plant something to "fill in" those spots too. I think I may do some bush beans...great idea Diane. I have a packet of Royal Burgandy bush beans I wanted to try..but didn't have space...this will be a good way to try them. It is too hot and sunny a spot to tuck in my usual lettuce or cabbage fill in plants..but beans...great idea!

I do what Jenny does as well with the onions and lettuce. Another thing I do is carry around a pocket of bean seeds and whenever I find an empty space, I plunk in a couple of bean seeds. I also have two flats of lettuce starts and will transplant here and there in rows that didn't germinate fully or as other things are picked.

I have my onions planted with lettuce between the rows. The lettuce will be long gone and the onions will keep going until later. I have done it before and it worked great.

I am having the same problem. but I have 1/2 a garden that went bad all the Cabbage, Califlower, Brussle sprout and Brocolli have gone to seed, with the onions I would just put in more onion sets small bulbs Green thing still has some. They will grow but will be a smaller onion in the fall.
