Posted - Jul 19 2009 : 07:52:31 AM I have had a garden about 9 years in the same spot the first year in the front half of the garden I put in the boards to raise it up and brought in dirt peat moss organic mulch pellets that look like bunny food but when they get wet they expand. Bought At our local Green Things I planted and had an ok result then we tilled up the back half a couple years ago and it took off. When I close down the garden everything in there will get run through a chipper shreader and tilled into the soil. Then in the summer we till and I plant and it goes crazy. I also have newspapers down with grass clippings on top around almost all the plants it really helps with the weed factor. The best you can do for the soil is lots and lots of organic matter and till it up. You can also grow a cover crop and that will help it just loosens up the soil for the next year.

Posted - Jul 18 2009 : 9:13:35 PM Diana, your garden looks wonderful!! Did you bring in top soil for your boxes or do you have good soil up there? My soil is mostly clay like, decomposed granite. Although when we clean out the barn we add it to the garden, it doesn't get enough. We don't keep animals in the barn all the time, only in certain instances. How long have you been working your garden in that spot? I'm trying to get ideas to help me improve my garden which slopes on 3 sides. You know I'm a side-hill girl over here.

Posted - Jul 17 2009 : 8:19:06 PM Wow! I always wanted a nice neat weed free garden. Yours is beautiful, Diana. I love seeing other people's gardens and how creative they are. I would love to just travel around taking pictures of gardens. Every one is so different and reflects that person's personality. Oh great. Now that I said that, I must be all crazy and disorderly and a total mess. Yep, that is me.
What have you been harvesting so far?
