This is my first time growing broccoli. I only have three plants that I tried this year. The crowns are about the size of a silver dollar and nice and tight. How big do you let them get before picking them? One crown is not tight and starting to go everywhere. Thanks

You definitely want to catch it before it goes to seed and is still tightly bunched but don't pull the whole plant and discard it yet, most broccoli plants after the initial harvesting of the flower bud will put out some tender side shoots, the agenda of the plant is to make seed so even after you cut it it won't give up and even though these side shoots won't be as big as the main they're still good eating!

I don't know but mine never got big like them. I bet lots of fertilizer and water alot, too. I quit growing it because they take up so much room for the little bit I got off each plant. And take awile to get the harvest, too. But I can still remember how good they are. And the color of just picked broc. is so green.

Thanks Kris, you described how they look just right. I think that I'll go ahead and pick them. I wonder how/what kind of broccoli they grow in the store to get them that big.

Tina, it seems like it's small one day then the next day you go out to look and it's gone to seed. You need to check every day or it will. I have never gotten a head like I get at the store before. Sometimes it's just one or two little branches. You want to pick when the little florets are still small. Once they open a little they are still good but you really want them before. I just steam them for a few minutes. It doesn't take long to cook so gotta watch that part, too. But oh so good! The flavor is wonderful, not like store bought.

Good luck. I hope you enjoy.
