Posted - May 24 2009 : 1:50:17 PM I am looking for a good garden fabric to cover a grassy area where I'd like to plant raspberries and strawberries. anyone have any luck with garden fabric? I tried finding the stuff MJ uses, but the website is confusing and more for DOT construction.
I've tried the thin fabric from the hardware store and it just acts as a greenhouse for the weeds. Maybe i'll have to give up on this year's planting and work on killing the grass and weeds naturally this season and plant next year.
any suggestions?

Posted - May 29 2009 : 03:31:07 AM I once made the mistake of using newspsper and then covered it with straw.
But the straw was from rye and wouldn't cha know, we had a crop of some of the healthiest GRASS a few months later! |

Posted - May 26 2009 : 5:43:30 PM Word of advice. Be prepared to stay right with the newspaper and have the water hose hooked up and ready. I carefully laid all the newspaper out just right, making sure every little square inch of grass was covered. I went in the house to get something to drink, and when I came back out, a little breeze had come up and had blown my newspaper ALL OVER the yard. Did I learn from that? Obviously not! A couple of weeks later, I did the same thing again, with the same result. I was so mad I myself as I was cleaning up those newspapers. Now, just what is the definition of insanity????

Posted - May 26 2009 : 12:10:29 PM I've had great luck with the shredded newpaper. Make sure you cut the grass very short first...cover it with the latest "news" and then wet it down. I've then covered that with dirt/mulch. I suppose a good layer of straw would keep that paper down. Earthworms love the "news".... |

Posted - May 25 2009 : 8:34:22 PM Tomorrow, try calling the phone number rather than just looking on the website. We buy it in large rolls from Spokane, WA delivered by a local trucking company but he told me that if a person calls, they sometimes have smaller remnants available they can ship UPS. Make sure when you call, you have the dimensions of what you need ready to give to them. I'll call tomorrow also to see if that's still the case. Antoinette, I wouldn't want to ship it twice. You might have a dealer near you.
