The weather has been so strange around here this year, but it's been great for my English roses. I thought you girls might like to see the (current) stars of my yard...Carding Mill (the melon coloured rose) and D'eauville (the butter/ivory coloured roses and bush)
I am just so pleased with the way they've bloomed this year. The D'eauville, especially. The small, teacup-like blooms look like they're simply floating on the stems. I wasn't sure I liked it after I purchased it, but I guess it just takes a few years for it to get going. Glad I have it now!

Janice, these are, and the Benjamin Britten rose that hadn't bloome yet as of the photos is as well. There is another David Austin rose that they sent to me by accident that just isn't. That rose gets eaten, spotted, whatever by everything and I treat it just the same, it's in a similar spot as well. Can't figure it out. It has about one good week, and then poof! It's on the downward spiral...

Jonni - And all the leaves are so lush and green. Are your roses fairly disease free? I've got a Mary rose, too. In fact, it came from a slip I took off the original bush in my yard in town. It has been a strong bush.
Pam - I've heard that fertilizing roses with fish emulsion is a good thing. I've got some and I'm going to try it this season.

Okay all you rose growers! I have a friend who says she gets very few buds on her bushes. I don't know much about roses at all - suggested it might be that she needs to prune them and check into the nutrients? (compost?) Any suggestions that I can pass along?

  Surprizingly the aphids have disappeared----theres about 20 buds on this precious Mary bush---1 in bloom so far. I am so happy that I tried rose bushes---I was always afraid they would just die on me.
Anybody know about Verbetium-----are they a once a year bloom? Thanks---and its sure great to have the sun back out. Have a great weekend ladies.

Beverly...congrats on your Mary rose surviving! They are lovely, lovely roses, for sure.
Tina, a farmgirl from Florida posted her "aphid" recipe and I use that. I repeat spray: it's 1 part cooking oil, 1 part dish washing liquid and 1 part water. Put it in a spray bottle and spritz early morning. I have some spots but no aphids :)

They are beautiful.
I just want to say that my Mary rosebush from David Austin which I planted last spring survived a really bad winter.....when I came back from overseas this March I thought for sure it was a goner.....it is doing great----has grown quite a bit---and has a lot of buds. I would highly reccomend this bush to anyone. I believe this is one tough bush. I bought 2 more Mary's this year along with 2 other ones from David Austin. Yes, I am excited----I was always afraid of roses----not anymore.
What do you all do about aphids? Let me know...thanks

They do smell absolutely divine. Very different. The melon coloured one almost smells like babies...it smells very much like Dreft, believe it or not! I'm so amazed at how many roses there are this year. The melon coloured rose has 12 large friends, and they are all blooming simulataneously, and the butter coloured roses are just blooming, one after the other. This morning, I cut several and made a nice arrangement for the house.

Oh, Jonni, thank you so much for sharing! That was just the lift I needed on this gloomy, rainy day in Alabama! I've never had much luck with roses. I planted some at our first house and they did so dismally, I haven't tried them at this house we're in. Well, except for knock-out roses and they'll grow anywhere. But we have sandy soil here and the azaleas love it (some are over 6' tall) so I think I'm gonna try, try again!

Oh, Jonni! When I saw that first photo I immediately drew in my breath as if I could have inhaled the fabulous scent of that flower. I am sure that it must smell as heavenly as it looks! Thanks for sharing such beautiful photos and letting us vicariously enjoy your garden!

That's funny, Betty...my more red roses haven't bloomed yet, either. They were all planted in the same day...wonder if that's a color thing? Take some photos--I looooove to see roses, no matter where they come from!

Some of my roses are in bloom--the yellow ones. The red ones are full of buds. However, they are just the roses that you get at the grocery store that have been planted outside. They have lasted for about five years now and I get a new one each year. Probably should take some photos. They are about 12 inches tall at the tallest.

Kris, that rose smells like heaven! The other rose I'm waiting on to bloom, called the Benjamin Britten smells like wine and pear drops!
Sandra, I wonder why it would be difficult to grow roses in your climate, unless it's because of the soil content. I'm not sure about Horseshoe Bend, but around Hot Springs, it was a bit strange. Lots of pine trees and the soil seemed...sandy, or something.
I get my English Roses from David Austin. They're a wonderful resource and I've yet to have an issue with any roses, customer service, etc...http://www.davidaustinroses.com/
Call them and talk to them about your zone.
I think odds are in your favor...you know, too, my mother in law planted her English Rose (Pat Austin) in a large pot an she brings it inside to weather in the potting shed each winter, but it's STUNNING. And thriving. So there's that option, too.

Oh...they are so beautiful! I can just almost imagine how good they smell. I planted my first roses this year in honor of my Mother who loved them but everyone here tells me "good luck"...I figure my Mother will help me tend to them. I just got some at Walmart but I think the English roses are know for their logevity, sturdiness and fragrance? Where do you get yours? I want more!!!! Odds are, the more I plant some are bound to thrive , right?
