Posted - May 18 2009 : 8:40:04 PM I have a fifteen week old border collie/Icelandic sheepdog mix and so far his behavior has been great but just in the past few days he excavated an old washtub that I had planted mesclun greens in and then he did the same thing to a barrel full of Tigger melons and now I'm finding craters all over in my garden,it doesn't look like he's burying anything and I haven't used any strong smelling fertilizers such as fish emulsion so I'm at a loss as to how to stop him from doing this. I keep filling in the holes and he keeps going back to the same spots,I have to keep him outdoors at night to protect my rabbits and chickens from raccoons and foxes, otherwise I would crate him, anyone have any suggestions or solutions to discourage a dog from digging in the garden?

Posted - May 21 2009 : 1:22:08 PM Thanks for all the suggestions,I'm trying a combination of things now,I started placing his poop in the holes he goes back to and that seemed to work,I've been trying to also be more vigilant to catch him in the act and if so I'll try the vinegar spray on him. During the day we keep pretty active,he's always with me when I'm out training on the horses or trail riding so he's not bored often during the day because we're always on the run but it's at night that I put him out so he can keep watch over the rabbits and chickens,we have alot of predators in our area and I've lost alot of chickens to foxes and raccoons, this is the main reason for having the dog,I'm really not too wild or savvy about dogs but they are one of the best defenses against predators,he's a pet to my Husband,to me he's an employee! Thanks again,I'll keep at him and hopefully we can get this worked out!

Posted - May 20 2009 : 10:42:53 PM I had a friend who said to burry ziplocks of amonia (vinegar would probabbly work too) not too deep. The dog piunctures the bag in digging and gets a nose full. I, personally, would be hesitanat to use the amonia, but I'd go for the vinegar. I agree with Tina though that the dog sounds bored....GOOD LUCK (we built a fence;mine's not too much a digger as a run-through kind of dog) Sharon

Posted - May 19 2009 : 8:39:42 PM he sounds like he is bored actually. those types of dogs needs loads and I mean loads of activity to keep from being destructive from boredom.

Posted - May 18 2009 : 10:15:46 PM That was exactly what I was going to suggest! It really works. Also if you keep a squirt bottle with vinegar water in it handy and you ever catch him at it- squirt him and try to get it on his nose. It won't hurt him but he won't like it!
