Okay, my seed potatoes came a couple of weeks ago but the weather was uncooperative and I've never planted potatoes before and just didn't know what to do.
When we got home from work today, I made a 4 x 4 "plot" for each variety and sort of spaced them in that "plot". Next came a 6" layer of straw. Tomorrow evening, I'll sprinkle some compost on top and water them. When the greenery is 6" tall, I'll add another layer of straw. Keep doing that until the greenery dies back?
Any glaring errors on my part?

I'm worried about the deer! Am I worrying unnecessarily? I know there's precious little they won't eat.

I think you're okay! I do my potatoes the same way and I've had great success. :) My only problem is keeping the chickenzs out of the straw! :(
