On my lunch hour, I went to the local feedstore and bought 3 heirloom tomato plants (2 for sauces--Cont. Genovese and one Elberta Peach) for $2.00 a piece (I will probably go back for more!!) but they didn't have any descriptions, just their cool little names so I ran across this awesome guide and thought you all might like it too--it even has wonderful color photos and nice descriptions. It's a pdf document. If you can't open the link, email me and I will try to send it to you as an attachment.

Glad to...it certainly helped me in choosing my tomatoes--it can be somewhat overwhelming!

Wonderful guide Jonni! Thanks so much for posting it!

I will go over there and get it, too. I'm all about the recipes, and if I can find something to make that Justin will eat, well, more power to me!

I will add that mag to my list of "things to read" since Violet arrived...hopefully I can do the "crib note" read!

Jonni - I bought the Summer issue of Country Gardens magazine on a Lowe's foray last week and it has a nice article about heirloom tomatoes and some very yummy sounding recipes. In fact, I liked the whole mag.

I'm so glad, Janice! My Compte Genovese already have fruit, so I'm getting really anxious!!! We should have fruit on all by the end of the week, I'm guessing--hot nights are in order, and high humidity. The bain of my existence, but the tomatoes love it!

I need to get some cages, too. I used to have some, but Lord only knows what happened to them!

Had the first pesto of the season on Wednesday...So good, made me weak in the knees! Summer is sooo good!

My tomato plants you brought me look really good so far, Jonni. :D We've gotten more rain in Irvington than in Louisville. And I've fertilized them, too. I almost didn't have enough tomato cages for all sixteen of them. LOL! I've used old cages that David has run over with the tractor and are all mangled. :O

I ordered my heirloom tomato plants from a company advertised by Mother Earth News. They are such healthy hearty plants. Pineapple, Brandywine...I can't remember the other names (6 different plants). I'll have to write them in my journal when I get home.

I'm having trouble finding heirloom tomatoes here. I found a Mr. Stripey and one called Mountain Pride. I've looked in places from Louisville to Corydon, In.

When i first read your post, I thought it said colon pictures, and I thought to myself, who the hell wants to look at colon pics, then I realized, yes my glasses might need updating. Beautiful pictures.
Zan, my daughter, and I have decided to plant only heirloom tomatoes this year. They are so wonderful. Last year we sampled the farmer's market's assortment, never a bad pick.

I'm glad this will help you gals...it sure did me! I came right back to the office and typed in my names and voila! This popped up and I thought for sure some of you might like it, too. I am a very visual person, so pics are important to me. And because I was looking for sauce tomatoes, I took a chance and bought the ones with the most "Italian" sounding name and I was right, it turns out :) Whew!

The guide also says that Red Brandywine is the best all purpose, full of flavor tomato and I picked those up too, but put them back because I just wasn't sure. I'll go get some of those, now. Also, my feed store had all of the "purple" and "chocolate" cherokee tomatoes listed in this guide--I was really impressed with their selection, but one lady said to me, "They don't have ANY selection here! I mean, I've never heard of a purple tomato--who would want that???? I'm looking for beefsteak and better boy's..."

Thank you so much Jonni. I wanted to order tomatoe seeds, but many places just give descriptions without the pictures. I have been wasting so much time looking up the pictures. This is my first year planting, and it really helps a lot to get a picture with the description. :)

That is a GREAT guide. I have saved it. There are tomatoes on there that I had never heard of. Each year I try to find some new heirloom tomatoes or ones that are different. Now I have even more to choose from. I really like the variegated leaves on that one tomato plant. Going to have to give that a try.
Thanks for sharing the great link. Wonderful photos!
