I am trying an 8 foot fence this year - plus hair from the barbershop, a bar of Ivory soap, and a cotton rop soaked in Hinder (tm) anyone have more ideas to keep deer out of the garden?

MOTHBALLS, hang 3-4 of them in net bags at differant heights around the edges of your gardens, it works for me in California, and for my Mom back home in Missouri.

I've put up an 8-foot fence. One night I forgot to close it and wouldn't you know, we found deer hoofprints inside the garden the next morning - he pulled up the green beans by the roots then crossed the garden at an angle, ran into the fence, then evidently followed the fence around the perimeter until he found the way out.

I have been very careful since then to close up the the fence opening EVERY NIGHT!

For the blow horn, don't you have to be there to make it go off? I never actually see the deer, just their footprints and the piles of deer doo-do and the big gaping holes in the plants where the blossoms used to be....

I'm wondering if using Roundup around the OUTSIDE of the fence would be cheating, organically speaking...

My county extension agent keeps referring to things as grown organically when I KNOW he uses roundup to control weeds (but no other pesticides or herbicides) I suspect he is stretching it...

I've tried it all. A tall fence works well but you can also use a blow horn like you use on a boat, you can buy them at walmart, and that usually chases them away, but all the sonic things and natural stuff only works for a little while. You just have to keep up the repellents until growing season is over to keep them from eating everything. Good luck!

So, the big problem I see coming up is, how do you rototill to keep weeds down with the fence up? You obviously would either have to take the fence down, or stay away from the fence...???/

I have heard that they can jump over a 6-foot fence. My fence posts are only 8 foot and that includes the foot in the ground, so the top of the fence is kind of "loose" - it is the 1-inch plastic mesh kind.

The other night DH and I were enjoying a fire in the firepit on the patio and saw 5 deer come in to the yard - they seemed to be frightened by the fire... so all I have to do is keep a fire going 24x7...

LOL

A year or so ago, I saw a video on youtube - someone has a sprayer with a motion detector on it. It hooks up to your garden hose. When something comes into your garden, the water sprays them.
If I can find it again, I'll attach a link. It was pure genius (and one of the funniest things I've ever seen).

Fences are about the only thing 100% deer proof. When we lived in No CA, people even started putting "ceilings" on their gardens - we were amazed at how high a deer can jump.

What I am going to try this year is to lay chicken wire on the ground. I heard that they will not walk on the wire. Big problem with that. You have to pick it up to mow. I keep asking my grandsons to come out and camp in the garden. Guess I'll have to do it myself. I'll make my outpost right in the middle of the garden.

Love the singing fish idea but seriously an 8 ft. fence is the only way. We had deer all over everything when we lived in town but they don't come anywhere near the yard or garden since we've moved out of town. I'm not sure why either. The closest we've ever seen them out here is across the pasture by the creek. Of course we also have 5 red Angus heifers that line up along the fence and stare at the deer. Guard cows. Who knew.

It's not about being perfect, but enjoying what you do. Set aside time to be creative.

I read somewhere that you can get those plaques that have singing fish on them and place them on the fence or post on your property. When they walk by they go off singing and it scares them away. Who kows if they would work or not.

Well, we simply fire off a couple of rounds with the shot gun ( into the air of course ) that usually does the trick. . . now that I think of it, have not seen a deer around since before last falls hunting season began.

The paintball thing is funny, can you imagine the stories during hunting season of the poor hunter up in his blind all morning and lo and behold , here comes your technicolor deer? The expression on his face would be priceless!

You can string fishing line around your garden. You do have to keep checking it, as it can break. But it seemed to help to keep the deer out.

Now that's a riot!

Paintball!

That gives me a great idea for father's day.

Dad has something about all the squirrels that eat the bird seed

Funny about shooting deer with paintballs. That is original!

My in-laws adopted a deer from some people who could no longer keep him in their neighborhood. They had spray painted the word PET in orange on his side so that no one would kill him. And I bet the neighbors wanted to! It was a "The Yearling" sort of situation.

Ditto

I also have dogs and the deer will come up to the front door and eat my flowers in the containers too.

I have techno color deer as I us a paint ball gun to get them to leave.

Don't waste your time with the soap, hair, rope, bloodmeal, couger poop or anything else, the only thing that works is a fence-trust me- I've tried them all.
