Anyone have an organic deterrant/killer of red headed ants in the garden? My dd has a garden near the woods which is full of ant hills and they're invading!

I got mine from the feed store. I think it was $20 for 50 pounds and the pounds went a long way. |

I know you can get dried molasses at feed stores that grind their own feed. Sometimes they use it to mix into certain livestock feeds to make them more palatable to the animals. Ours came in 50 lb. bags, but you may be able to get a smaller amount if they have an open bag and could just weigh it out for you and charge you by the pound. Either way, it wasn't very expensive. You may also be able to find it at Tractor Supply or another farm supply store. Good luck! |

I'm not positive, but I think you can get dried molasses at a feed store.
About those ants, I use cinnamon sprinkled around or set in small plastic lids. I haven't done it outside, but works fairly well inside. Also, cucumber slices. These methods worked for us. I have to watch what I use inside because of the dog and grandkids.
I have used Borax sprinkled around outside for ants and flies, but that wouldn't be good for the chickens.

Where would you get dried molasses? Or do you just spread around regular molasses and let it dry? I've never heard of dried molasses!

I took a compost class in Dallas, Tx last year and they said to use dried molasses in and around the compost pile. It worked and so I spread it out over my yard and that work too. So try that. |

I tried that last year on the fire ants...the grits disappeared! But I found them in piles hidden under my garden stepping stones! It's like I fed them a feast! Didn't work! Tried Splenda...didn't work! Citrus oil and molasses worked pretty well. Pour it over the mound. I resorted to a Bayer ant killer...it's a man-made organic compound...it worked best. But try the other first!

DD has chickens too - I forgot to mention that in my initial posting. She read that you can put out grits for them, and they eat it and it swells and blows the ants up. Anyone tried that?

Jessie- I have resorted to using those as well. They are called Terro baits and they do work well. I only have used the indoor baits though. We seem to be overrun with ants in our walls! They do make outdoor baits, but I have chickens and don't want them to eat a poisoned ant. :( Not sure how eco-friendly they are as it is poison.

I dont know if its necessarily organic or not. I have to assume it is, because my Mom uses it and she's pretty eco-friendly..hehe.
There are these little packets, they remind me of the gel stuff you put in the glade plug in things, called Taro or Tarro or Tarot..anyways you get the idea. I think you can get them just about anywhere. They lure the ants in and then they take it back to the colony and over time you see less and less ants. The first couple of days you will feel like you are being over run because it calls the ants to it. But I guess that's how it supposed to work. We had the ants terribly last year and that was the only I used that finally got rid of them
I have heard you can kill the ant hills with bleach, but being as it isn't very green friendly, you might not want to go that route. :)
