Posted - Apr 18 2009 : 5:53:19 PM Ok, I am officially gardening!! I got my gardens tilled this morning and I have been out there ALL day! I am pooped. I had to take a shower because I couldn't stand me anymore. That good ole been in the garden stanky smell. Oh what fun. I have sunburn all over and a headache, too. And my neck is so sore. I can tell how outa shape I have gotten.
So my middle granddaughter, Coryn, was a BIG help with the potatoes and onions. I mean that girl planted a few rows and raked the dirt on over half of them. And she's just 7. She is a little farmgirl for sure. She just kept working. The other 2, nothin' out of them. Well, Kansas did do a few potatoes and onions. But Chloe held a bucket and dropped 2 in. She even told me that's how many. They were a big help today. And my daughter actually helped, too.
We got 4 1/2 rows of red and white taters, 1 row of Texas sweet onions, 3 rows of field peas, 2 rows Bkue Lake green beans, 3 rows okra (seed from last years crop) 5 rows Hickory King corn. And these are 200' rows. They are so long I try not to look back or I get discouraged real quick. I will plant squash and zuchinni over there later. And more beans, peas and corn, too. That's one garden. Haven't even started on the other one yet.
I will not be moving too much tomorrow. I can tell already. Over 7 hours out there today. It can rain now.
Happy plantin' ya'll! Kris

Posted - Sep 17 2009 : 3:56:06 PM Hey guys, just checking in, I have been away for a while and it looks like everyone else has been as well. We had a reat time camping, the weather was cool and Sunday it rained, but all in all it was nice. We relaxed mostly and let my inlaws entertain the kids, they love looking for frogs, giant earth worms, and salamanders, oh and of course crawdads. I never thought I would say this but I WISH IT WOULD STOP RAINING!!! It has rained and stormed all week! I want cool sunny weather. Well I miss you all, a gathering must be in our future!! Kelly |

Posted - Sep 07 2009 : 05:40:17 AM Oh no, Kris! I don't even have your phone number! But I do have your address and I am sorry, I have still not sent you that DVD of photos. I was sick last week and I meant to get one of the special DVD + R discs from my brother, but I found a great deal in the paper yesterday for a huge stack of them, which I will buy for myself this week. I have other discs, but they won't work on the computer that Nick gave me and I have already transferred all of my photos onto it, so now they are locked in there with no way to get out without those discs.
I hope that you have figured out the mystery of Sadie and the bad milk. Sounds like a Nancy Drew book, doesn't it?
Kelly, I hope that y'all got well and were able to go on your camping trip 'cause that sounded like a lot fun!
I've just been immersed in reading homeschooling books, making lesson plans, and writing to Nick at bootcamp. I feel like I can't devote any time to any of my other pursuits until I can "write" him through this and see him in three weeks. It is really hard when your "baby" is a 17 hour drive away and people are treating him badly and he is so very homesick, but he is doing well in all the tasks that they give him. He has been sick this past week and that is very hard to deal with while in bootcamp!
Oh, I hope all of y'all are going to eat piles of BBQ today and have fun with your families on this Labor Day Holiday!

Posted - Aug 31 2009 : 07:05:23 AM Hey ya'll. I am going to have this internet turned off for awhile. I thought I'd tell ya'll in case anyone wonders about me. I am fine just some finacial set backs and this is a way to cut back. And get me up off my butt! I spend way too much time on here. So I will check in from time to time when I go to the library and say hello. I did have a note on the mailbox Sat. saying highspeed finally made it to our house! But now I can't afford it. Anyway, I will talk to ya'll later.
Hugs to all. Kris

Your meatloaf dinner sounds wonderful! I want some!! I also want a home cooked turkey dinner. I am thinking of buying a frozen bird on Thursday (Payday!) and hiding it from Doug in our cooler and surprising him with it on my next day off. I think that would be fun! :D

Posted - Aug 30 2009 : 3:23:10 PM I just saw the number of posts and had to change it fast! I hope everyone's having a nice relaxing weekend. It's dreary and rainy here. I rendered lard so I can make an apple pie later with fresh apples from my tree. Now I am making bread. I was out.
I have been really lazy today. Just doing a little here and there. I have had Kansas since Friday. Abby just took her to Flintstone with her. She took her to a birthday party yesterday. They did the hair and makeup and finger and toe nails. They both looked so cute. Today they both put on black and white clothes and went back to town. Kansas just loves her aunt.
I am still trying to figure out why Sadie's milk is so bad. I went to some goat forums and there were a few people with the same problem. I can't afford a vet right now to do blood work. But someone did that and had the protein levels checked on one of her does. It was way low. So she started giving her Vit. B shots every day. Raised the protein in the feed. Things like that. So I started 2 nights ago giving her the shots. I already feed 16% all grain with some alfalfa pellets. They all eat the same. Hers is still horrible. I will check it every day. Actually yesterdays was not too bad but todays is. I have gone to once a day and may just dry her sorry self up and be done with it. Sorry to bore ya'll with all this. Sometimes writting things down just helps.
Bubba said hello, ya'll.

Posted - Aug 28 2009 : 07:01:10 AM Hey Nikki. I am so glad that school is going well for ya'll. It is fun. When I did it I was so organized. I wish I was that way now. But it sounds like ya'll have gotten settled and Oakley is loking it, too. And you will be learning alot along with her. That's fun, too.
Is it not raining in Alabama today? It's not stopped since I got up this morning. I got the critters fed and got 3 goats milked just now and all in the rain. Sadie Mae Belle is not cooperating. She came out but it wasn't her turn so went back in. Now I can't get her to come back out. So I might just go ahead and start the drying up process on her. I hate it but I just can't get her milk to taste good. So I am just wasting my time and feed on her. I don't know what to do with her now, though.
I am craving meatloaf, mashed taters and brown gravy and green beans for dinner with rolls to sop it all up with! That just sounds so good right now to me. Such a good rainy day dinner. Maybe an apple crumble or something appley for dessert. And I haven't even ate breakfast yet. I went to the market Wed. in Chatt. and got 4 lbs. of good grass fed burger from Sequatchie Cove farm. It is so good. So I will add some of my pork sausage to it to make the meatloaf. Yummo! I can't wait for dinner.
What's so funny is even though Mrs. T has seen how much she's spent on these scams, she'll still say she's only sent $60. Her DD was going to write the New York Times about this but decided not to because they would probably use her name. So I will continue to take all the crap out of her mail box before she gets to it. Abby will be moving into Mrs. T's little apartment that's connected to her house soon and then she'll be able to get it the days she's off. When will they ever stop sending this crap though? And she will be going to her DD's in Nov. for the winter.
Ya'll have a great dry day today.

Posted - Aug 28 2009 : 06:36:56 AM Oh, Kris, when I got to the part where you wrote "I went out today to go steal mail" I thought coffee was going to shoot out of my nose. Funny! But you are right to do it. My husband's grandmother sent over $12,000 to those "prize" things. I can't believe that people can live with themselves preying off of old people like that. "Revenge is mine," say-eth the Lord, so I am expecting that He will be dishin' a lot of it out to that scum!
I'm sorry that those crappy things are happening, especially about the debt and job situation. I hope that Abby and your son, Diane, will be able to find better jobs. I will be praying for that!
Diane, I hope that you don't have strep throat. Have you tried gargling warm, salt water? I hate doing it and it always makes me gag, but it usually makes my throat feel better.
Cherry, oh, what an awesome thing for the Starbucks people to say about La. She is very pretty! Would she want to go into modeling? That would be a great way for her to make money for college.
Tina, I'm so glad that you have been busy with orders for t-shirt quilts! I bet those will be cozy to sleep under during the winter!
Homeschooling is going well. I have discovered that Oakley remembers things that she hears, so that must make her an audio learner. I should have realized this when those multiplication flash cards didn't seem to help at all last year. LOL! Now we are doing multiplication rap. I wonder if they have set the parts of speech to music? HA! Well, I guess I am in the fourth grade again this year, but I love learning. This is such a great opportunity to share the things that I am passionate about with Oakley, to find out what she is passionate about and to encourage her to research the things that interest her. We are going to learn by focusing on topics that we find to be interesting, so far that is China, tigers, pandas, the human body, water, Alabama history, the Gulf of Mexico, and Latin and Greek with neat handwriting and language arts being emphasized throughout.
My goals for this homeschooling adventure are to instill Oakley with the ability to think for herself, conduct her own research, and have the confidence to communicate with anyone either orally or through the written word. And I will glad to bone up on my grammar, spelling, and punctuation knowledge. I know that they are seriously lacking!
Today we are going to yank out all of the overgrown tomato and basil plants. I like your idea, Alee, of covering it all over with manure, newspaper, and plastic. I know that I do not want to plant anything until spring!

Posted - Aug 28 2009 : 05:25:54 AM Hey Diane. Sore throats are not good. I hope you get over it quick. Mine always turn into doozies and I have to get z=packs. I am so sorry your son is going through this, too. It's just not fair that the ones who are going to school and working their butts off are the ones who can't afford the health insurace and get all the benifits that people who have tons of kids and are single and don't work get. That's another thing that makes me so mad. Abby is making too much to get any help at all, like medicaide or food stamps or anything to just help het to get by. And her student loans are about $250 right now and will probably go up when she's done. And there is nothing out there for her right now. She's making a little over $12 an hour and when she does get another job she'll have to start at around $8 if she lucky enuf to even find something that'll pay that. Oh, goodness, it's just a bad time right now and so many people are hurting because of it. It's just not fair for the single hardworking people out there. They should be able to get some kind of medical break. Also old people shouldn't have to pay so much for all their medical stuff. Like Mrs. T has no dental coverage. She had to fork out about $2000. last year for some dental work. What do poor people do? I guess they just have to suffer. Oh my, I think maybe I need to stop now. Sorry.
It's raining, it's pouring. Man, I sure wish I had planted greens now. They would be coming up with all this rain we've had lately. Next week is supposed to be in the real low 80's. I will do all the gardening then if it's not too wet.
I need to milk but I don't like going out in the rain and they don't either.
My hubby's been up in N.Y. this week. He was in Buffalo a few days and now is in Penn. He drives a truck. Where is Blasdell. It sounds nice.

Posted - Aug 27 2009 : 5:32:03 PM I hate blaaaaaaaa days. I have a sore throat and it hurts just to swallow. My son had dinner with us and he said he will have his student loans paid off in 6 years if he keeps sending in 80% of his paycheck. He is in need of a new car but like me hates buying things like that and thinks his 12 yr old car will make it another winter. Like Abby he has had to pay all his medical bills once he turned 25 even tho he was still in college my insurance would not cover him and the insurance he had through the college didn't pay for dental then theres co-pays and medicine. It seem the harder they try the more behind they get. Then other people just take and take and take some times it drives me crazy. Go and pick a bunch of flowers and place them all over the house do any thing to keep the blaaaaaaaaaa's away. I would but my DH is allergic to them, I'm just glad I can have them outside.
Hope all your days are Sunnydays. dianebcarterhotmailcom.blogspot.com |

Posted - Aug 27 2009 : 4:47:13 PM Ya'll, I just feel so blahhhhh right now. I don't know what is wrong with me. I have to force myself to do anything anymore. I went out today to go steal mail and visited Mrs. T awhile. It started raining and I just wanna be home when it's raining. So I went to the feed store and got critter feed. Got home. Abby was here doing school work for tonight. She's about to get laid off work soon. She's so depressed about this. She's been putting aps and her resume all over the place and nothing yet. Plus she's just bought this brand new 2010 car with the very high payments. Plus she went to the gyno several months ago and that bill is so big. And one of them has gone to collections. She started srying and I am just mad because of all that's happening to her. She's trying her hardest to make something for herself and get a goos education (which she is paying for) and can't afford insurance and she's just a mess. I am so mad at this crappy economy and all the mess it's making in paople's lives right now. And mad at people that take advantage of old people. ( Mrs, T's DD was here for a few days and added up all the checks she has written to all these "prize" things and so far she has sent $620.00). And I ess I am just a bit depressed right now.
I did make myself clean the living room and the kitchen! Yeah me! I do love when the house is clean. I need flowers all over right now, too. I will go pick all the wildflowers I can find tomorrow and put them all over this house. That will make me feel better.
Alee, I worked at Ace Hardware for 5 years and had to stand on that hard concrete floor all day. It isn't good for the back, either. I'm thinking about just burning my garden this winter.
Cherry, I'm so glad ya'll had a good night and La's pics turned out so good. Will you be posting some of them? I had some friends that were pro. photographers that did Abby's. We went downtown Chatt. to Miller Park by the waterfall. Then to the Hunter Museum. Then to a statue type garden with all kinds of great sculptures. I have a whole album. She started out with her prom dress with the hair all fixed in the park. Then she changed into a red ball gown at the museum. Then into overalls with her long hair down at the sculpture garden. There was quite a crowd, too.
Ya'll have a great night. I am not milking tonight, either. I have gone to OAD with Sadie and Abby. And I am going to do that with Sandy and Faith, too. I am going to have to just dry Sadie up. Her milk still tastes horrid. Or I need to sell her. I can't keep her if I don't milk her.

Posted - Aug 27 2009 : 2:59:38 PM Senior photos are so much fun! I remember doing mine. It's amazing what a good photographer can do with a poor subject. I'll have to find one laying around somewhere and scan it. You all will laugh at how young I was! :D
Things are going good. I need to get some new shoes for standing on those hard floors while I am at work. Yikes! Sore feet!
Nora and Tala are doing great! I am thinking I am going to dig out my huge rubbermaid tub and start hauling home a cubit foot of manure each time I go. I really want to work it into my garden, then do the cardboard/newspaper layering over the winter to help my garden soil. I am even thinking of putting black weed fabric down this winter over the top of the layers to help cook the mixture and to keep down those pesky spring weeds. The only bad thing with that is that I couldn't winter sow my seeds or early spring sew the seeds. I would have to plant all sprouted seedlings... We'll see!

Posted - Aug 27 2009 : 09:41:40 AM Hey, ya'll! We had La's photoshoot yesterday afternoon. She ROCKED it!! I can't wait until we get the proofs! We met the photographer in Mt. Brook, a somewhat "high-class" area of Birmingham and she took kind of urban pics, then we walked over to a park where all of these "Brookies" were going for their afternoon run and she took some nature pics. We got alot of looks! Lauren was going in and out of a Starbucks to change her clothes and they were so gracious. The barista asked if we were doing portfolio shots. I told him they were just senior pictures and he said that he thought La was a model. I told La about it on the way home and she said she eats too much to be a model. I can't wait to share the pics with ya'll!
Well, Kris, Brian didn't eat half a cow afterall. He opted instead for the pork ribs and I had my delicious Sashimi tuna that absolutely melts in your mouth! Yummmmmy!!! I wish I had some right now! Then we went to see the new Brad Pitt movie and I loved it. It's not for everyone, but suited my sometimes twisted sense of humor. And then there's Brad Pitt. It was a bit bloody like all of Quentin Tarentino's movies. But then there was Brad Pitt. I'd watch it again. Because, after all, there is Brad Pitt. (Hee! hee!)
I hope your step-dad's okay. And how sad about that fella dying of the swine flu. That is the H1N1. I saw one CDC estimate on the internet that they believe up to 90,000 people could die from it. That's a staggering number! One school reported Monday that they had 300 kids out sick. Not all of them were sick with the flu, some had strep and others had sinus infections, but still, my gosh, 300 kids in one school?! And Tina, my sister was the same with her kids like your step-DIL. My sister is what I call "clorox-crazy", too. She is OCD about germs and is constantly making the girls use hand sanitizer and wiping EVERYthing down with those clorox wipes. I've told her that those girls will never have an immune system if she keeps killing all the germs, good and bad, that they come in contact with. Sure enough, when the eldest started pre-school, she went from one bug to another the whole year. There is such a thing as too much of a good thing. And there's something to be said for letting your kid play with other kids, even on that dirty playground equipment in the park! It just seems like kids don't play together outside of school like they used to. When we were growing-up, we were usually outside if it wasn't raining or too cold throughout the whole year and all the kids on our street played together. It's just not like that anymore.
And about that hornet's nest, ya'll. Brian was telling one of the "old-timers" that works for him about it and the man asked how far off the ground it was. Brian told him a couple of feet. And the man said that that means we're going to have a really cold winter. Hmmm....any of you ever heard that before?
I had the same problem with the dishwashing detergent, Kris. I went back to using the store-bought. Ugh.
Kelly, you need to post pics of Abby-girl in her leotard! Will she get to wear a tutu? I love pics of little girls in tutus! And we have to see pics of your treasures, too! Come on, girl! Don't keep us waiting!
I hope you aren't still too sore, Nikki. Rock moving has made my back a bit sore. But I can't whine about it. I tried and each time I did, Brian told me that I wouldn't be hurting my back if I'd exercise more and build up my core muscles. Brat. I don't want him to speak back to me when I whine. I just want to be petted. He should know that by now.
Okay, so now I need to run to town to the post office now that I've had my farmgirl fix for the day! Hope ya'll don't wear yourselves out with your busy-ness!

Posted - Aug 27 2009 : 07:16:01 AM Good Morning All,
WOW ya'll have been very busy!!! It has been crazy here the past few weeks. Got the fall garden planted. To me it is harder to plant the fall garden than the spring one. I have had special orders for t-shirt quilts, so I have been sewing like crazy. My two girls and my sil and the grandboys and their *#* father (my x) are flying this Sat to Wisconsin. So I get to take care of my DD dog. She is a Yellow lab Golden Retriever mix. She is also 13 years old. I don't mind keeping her I just hope she doesn't die on me.lol
Kris I am with you on the cabin motel thing. I have done my share of camping in tents when my girls were little. Being a single mom thats was the only way we could take a vacation.
Kelly- I bet Abby is the cutest thing!!! How old is she? What a great idea small enamel pots!! I never would have even thought about that. Some people are soooo creative.
Cherry- Way to go Farm Girl!!! We aren't afraid to try new things. We just have to get the job done, right? That is a huge hornets nest!!! I am so glad no one got hurt!! We had a small one on the outside of our garage. It was about the size of an orange.
Nikki- How is Oakley doing in school? What grade is she in? I am glad you are pumping her full of vitamins!! My husbands grandson started pre-K this year he has caught something. His Mom kept him away from other children when is was younger. She was so proud that he hasn't been sick when she sent him to school. I told her to be prepared he was going to catch everything that came by because he haasn't been expose to things. She thought I was talking crazy. So from now on I will keep my mouth shut!!
Sorry for the rambeling, got to take the dog to the vet. Talk to ya'll later.

Posted - Aug 26 2009 : 06:34:56 AM Hey Kelly. I have got something for you. I need your new address. Just e-mail it to me if you can. If not I'll hand deliver it. I am so glad you had a good shopping day. I love to just go to the antique malls around here. Have you been to the ones in East Ridge over by Cracker Barrel? I can go hang out all day there. And the one on 75 at that old mall on Cloud Springs Rd. I can spend all day in that one. It's huge. I can just imagine little Abby in a tutu! She's just too too cute! And my grands usually get sick the first few weeks of school, too. When Chloe was just in kindergarten she got really sick. Ended up in the hospital with mono and gastrointenitis. Poor little thing. It was pitiful. So keep them pumped with the vitamins. Greenlife sells all the good immune boosting stuff for kids. Kansas is pretty healthy so far. I think it's all the goat milk she drinks! Ya'll have fun camping. I miss doing that. Although now I just want a cabin or motel.
Nikki, how's school for ya'll so far? I hope Oakley hasn't gotten sick yet. And I tried the recipes from the thread that's by Keeping in Touch. Alee had some dishwasher detergent that I tried. The first few times it worked great and I was just thrilled. But after that I started getting the film on the glasses and milk jugs. So I am sure it was on all the dishes, too. Just could see it on the clear glass. So I had to go get my 7th Generation detergent again. I love the washing powder, though. I got that from the Beehive Cottage blod spot. Mary Jane Lee's blog. And also got the toothpaste (which I love and still use) and deodorant (which I had a reaction too and amm so upset about because I really liked it but had to stop using) on the same sight. I'll go look in a minute. But Alee can tell ya more. I need to look again at the mag's recipes. I have them all saved.
I am so glad you had a good time on your trip. I'm going to go look at the pics now.
I am going to make grape juice today. I got a big pan full of good organic red and white grapes from a friend yesterday and need to get them in jars today. They are so good and sweet. This will be the first thing I have canned so far. I have put corn and peas in the freezer but no canning. I want to do pears and maybe some grape jelly, too.
See ya'll. Kris

Posted - Aug 26 2009 : 05:49:21 AM Oh, y'all have so many exciting things going on! It thrills me to find out what y'all are doing!
Kris, I meant to ask you. You said that you had made your own laundry detergent, toothpaste, and deodorant. Did you use Julia's recipes that they printed in the latest issue of MJF magazine? And how did the deodorant work for ya? - Yay for having lessons making goat's milk soap! That will be such fun to get together with someone who knows how to do it! I'm sorry about your girls not having the best of environments to grow up in. I can't BELIEVE that I used to smoke since I HATE it so much. Makes me mad to have to smell it. LOL! - I hope that your hubby is taking extra precautions to guard against the flu. I'm telling the plain ole regular flu is bad enough!
Cherry! I am so proud of you for driving the bobcat! That was a scary thing to take on. And happy anniversary! I hope y'all had a wonderful time together! I love all of your photos. Looks like that desk is going to turn out extra pretty with the discovery of that inlaid wood. And your spare room looks so wonderful and inviting! I can't believe that Brian took on that hornet's nest. I finally saw a hornet last year in Selma. That thing was three inches long!!! I trapped it in a Styrofoam cup and ended up cutting it in half, but the thing stayed alive. Oh!!! It is creeping me out just remembering it! I can only imagine how painful a string would be from one of those things. A fall get together sounds wonderful!!!
Alee, I like the sound of a "flashy trot". Oh, I bet Tala looks just gorgeous, prancing around, her glossy coat gleaming, with her eyes, bright and proud. It would be so neat to see what that flashy trot looks like. Are you allowed to show her on YouTube?
Kelly, awww, I bet Abby looked adorable as a little ballerina! I hope that you are taking lots of photos! Sounds like you really made a haul on your shopping trip! I can't wait to see more photos of your house as you decorate it. I love all of the special details, and I can see why your husband's work is so sought after. It is beautiful! - Have fun camping! I'm so glad that y'all are going to do that! And I am excited for the weather to start cooling down so that we can go camping too. There are so many places that I want to explore!
My brother and I lived through our Locust Fork kayaking quest. It took us longer than we thought it would and we didn't bring as much water and food as we should have, but it was lots of fun and the scenery is just gorgeous. I love Alabama! I put photos on my Alabama Heart of Dixie blog, if you would like to see them. I took Oakley's camera with me. What I really need is a waterproof casing for my camera because there are many lovely places to photograph on the river and that cheap camera could not do them justice. But y'all, I'm gonna have to take some Aleve today!

Posted - Aug 26 2009 : 04:28:29 AM Hey ya'll! yes I am alive! You all have been so busy, I am glad I took the time to log on and catch up! Tina, I think a quilt shop is a fantastic idea! I want to open a fabric/yarn shop with my sil someday, I love to sew and she loves to knit. Nikki, I thought og wearing a mask too, I did see lots of people wearing them in the airport when wee went on vacation. Cherry, the desk is awsome, I too can't wait to see it finished. And a fall gathering sounds great, let me know when, Kris and I can come your way or ya'll can come up here! I enjoyed our time together and look forward to meeting again, I am anxious for Fall, I want to get all my stuff out of the attic and decorate! I love FAll! Kris, sounds great that the cows are "plowing" the garden, less work for you, and the veggies will just make them healthy right? I hope the girls are better, I have been feeding my kids vitamins to try to keep them from getting sick, they ususally get sick the 2nd week of school. I think its from being around all those other kids, new germs, that they have been away from all summer. Well, we are going to go camping over Labor day weekend, we are going to Joyce Kilmer in NC. WE love it there, the camp ground is called HorseCove. very primitive, but nothing my camper can't handle! I found lots of treasures at the antique store, in fact my sis got me collecting small enamel pans to hang on my kitchen wall, I bought 4. I got an old tool box, and some vintage fishing stuff for my sons room. A fun trip we had, I love looking at that kind of stuff! We also found a few closeout stores that of course I was successful in buying something in. Well guys, I better get off here and get Abby up for school, don't want her to be late or grumpy! Oh, last night was her first ballet lesson, you all should of seen her in her cute leotard, my little ballerina. |

Posted - Aug 25 2009 : 3:50:05 PM Cherry, happy anniversary! I hope ya'll have a great night. ANd tell Brian he better not eat half a cow! But I think I could right now myself. I am hungry. You have been busy, girl. I can't believe that desk was painted over. I can't wait to see it when it's done. I bet it's gonna be just amazing. I can just imagine all the great stories you will write on that desk soon.
My hubby said a truck driver up north just died from swine flu today. My mom had to take the step dad to the ER last night and there are a few kids in there with swine flu, too. Isn't that what the H1N1 is? It's too scary for me. I told my hubby with him being out among so many people he might need to think about getting the shot. I don't want one. I have never had the flu.
I am so glad you showed Brian what you're made of! Good for you! I would have done the same thing. I hate someone telling me I can't do it. Ha! I would love to drive a tractor. I want to drive a hay tractor. It looks so fun.
Yes, a fall get together sounds fun. I need to get away from here. I was just thinking I'd love to go to the Smokies. I like to go up there in the fall just to drive around. We used to camp all the time when the kids were younger.
I hope ya'll have a great night out. See ya. Kris

Posted - Aug 25 2009 : 10:25:14 AM Whew!!! I been busy, girls! Friday night, we met four other couples for dinner and drinks at our local "saloon" and were treated to a gorgeous sky as we sat out on the patio...

Then Saturday morning, I got up and started on refinishing Uncle's desk.
I had Brian put it on the front porch for me to work on so I could FULLY enjoy the fabulouso weather we had this week-end! The breeze was absolutely delicious! My Uncle made this desk and it was painted in a style popular around 50 years ago. A base color was applied, then a stain "wash". The base color on this desk was pink. Ha! The same pink as my doll furniture that Uncle made me when I was 5!
I began stripping the paint away and found the most wonderful thing!!! The top was inlaid!! Boy, that Uncle was a talented carpenter!
And how very much he must have loved Mimmie to paint over such beautiful detail work, because I have absolutely no doubt that Mimmie was responsible for that pink paint!
Then Sunday, Brian and I gathered rock from around the place to do stepping stones. Oh my geez!!! We spent several hours lifting these heavy rocks and peeking under them and poking questionable holes with a crowbar and just kind of wandering around the property to check things out. Brian kept giving me a hard time because I'd get side-tracked by neon orange mushrooms or cool bugs or whatever caught my eye. And then the CHALLENGE! Brian had lifted up this huge-o rock that was too heavy for him to carry. He told me to bring the bobcat up and he'd lay it over in the bucket. Uh-oh. I've never drove the bobcat. Honestly, it scares me. I've watched Brian on the thing before and caught myself totaling all the different life insurance policies I have on the boy cause I just knew he was about to flip the thing over and crush his stubborn head. I told him No. It had rocks in the bucket and was headed up a hill with a natural ditch running down the center and there were tree roots and rocks and all kinds of forest floor rumble in the way. And then he went and did it. Smart ass. He said, "And here I thought you were a farmgirl." Ok. That was low. So I climbed my gangly-self up in it and listened hard as he yelled at me what everything did (it was running, he was a good bit away, and I was having a hard time hearing him). And off we went! And I did it! I didn't flip. I didn't smoosh him. I didn't get it stuck. I even got back in a few minutes later to move it to a different spot. I was so very proud of myself for facing my fear and learning a new skill!! Lauren came home later while I was still riding my success-high and I proudly told her what I'd done. She had this serious look on her face and said, "I don't know what the big deal is. I taught myself how to operate it when Daddy first bought it." Smart ass.
And you'll just have to believe me about the whole thing 'cause THAT I didn't get a picture of. But, I didn't forget the hornet's nest...
UGH! Gives me the heebie-jeebies just looking at the picture!
And then yesterday, I spent the day working more on the spare room. (Am I ever gonna get finished with it?!) Saturday afternoon, a guy who works for Brian came and got the gym equipment. Yay!! Now we have room for a bed!
Not so bad, if I do say so myself.
And today is our anniversary, so I'm spending the day pampering myself with homemade facial masks and doing the toes and actually fixing the do instead of letting it dry curly and pulling it up into a ponytail. I want some good sashimi. Brian wants the side of a cow. So we've compromised by going to Outback. Then we're gonna go to the movies (yes'm, Brad Pitt). And he's taken off tomorrow, so who knows what else might happen! ;) And tomorrow is La's photoshoot for her senior pics. Busy, busy, busy!!
Nikki, I can actually picture you walking around with that mask on!!! Brian has one, too. And some respirators. And I'm thinking there might be some money to be made. Picture it...cute little masks that co-ordinate with your outfits or jewelry. Hmmm....And I'm anxious to hear about your kayaking trip on Locust Fork. GOSH! I haven't been there in FORever! La's feeling much better. She's taking Home Ec this semester and part of one of her assignments is to keep a daily food log. I looked it over last night and she's eating more and drinking more than I thought, so that's good. Brian and I both have been after her to use her hand sanitizer throughout the day. I'm really concerned about her getting the flu. She does not make a fun sick baby. Neither does Brian. Ugh! I can't think about that.
Kris, I am really excited about your goat milk soap!! You surely have a customer in me when you start making it! I love it! And I'm happy about your new Nubian boy. Some romancing gonna be going on up there! And you need one of those bicycle flags to go on your cage over the hen nest so you'll be able to find it easily. I just had a mental pic of all these flags scattered around your pasture, waving in the wind! Hee! hee! I hope Chloe and Coryn are feeling better. A home environment really does make a difference in a kid's health. Two of my nephews are always sick, especially the youngest one, and I'm convinced it's because of how their mama (my ex-SIL) is raising them. The boys don't have a bedtime, they eat whatever they can find, usually junk, and she rarely makes them bathe. They're 13 and 9. We hadn't seen them in a while a few years back and she finally let them spend-the-night with us. Dawson, the youngest, asked me constantly why he had to wash his hands, why he had to drink milk with his supper, why he couldn't have cookies for breakfast, why we had to eat at the table instead of in front of the tv, why he had to go outside to play instead of playing video games, why he had to hear a bedtime story and say his prayers, why he couldn't fall asleep with the tv on, why he had to take a bath before bed, why he had to go to bed at 9, on and on and on it went!!! It took everything within me to let him go home with his mama. Especially when he was throwing a conniption, crying that he wanted to stay with Aunt Cherry and Uncle Brian. Just goes to show you that kids really do want structure and order in their lives and not be left to their own devices and choices. Awwww...now I'm missing my lil' bud.
Okay, I've rambled enough! We need to plan a fall get-together, ya'll!!! I have so many fall-entertaining ideas and recipes I do!!!
