Posted - Apr 16 2009 : 1:59:09 PM You can also plant them in a garbage barrel (clean of course) and that way you can just dump them out at harvest-and even use a spray hose to wash away the debris- Clean potatoes!

Posted - Apr 16 2009 : 1:44:10 PM Diana, I'm glad I read this...I for one will probably NOT do this then. We have a 6 foot long black rat snake that loves to hang out around our house in the spring. If you want to see me run for the hills, it would be if I found him sleeping in the warm straw while digging potatoes. I don't think I'd ever eat a potato again! |

Posted - Apr 16 2009 : 11:25:37 AM Miss Wilma,
Here is a link to an article about growing potatoes in straw, http://www.colostate.edu/Dept/CoopExt/4DMG/VegFruit/potatoes.htm .
I have been thinking about growing my potatoes this way, too, this year. I got 10 lbs of seed potatoes the other day and need to get them planted. I may do half in straw and half in dirt to see which one is better.
Good luck with your garden! |
