I was watching the national news the other night and they kept talking about the surge in urban veggie gardening. How individuals are taking out the lawn and putting in vegetable gardens. They interviewed a gentleman that does this for a living. I saw that and thought hey there are farm girls all over the country that could do that in a heartbeat for someone and make some extra needed cash in the process. There are so many of us that have been gardening for years, that have the knowledge of composting, raised bed maintenance, when to plant, what to plant, etc. If I didn't have a full time job, I would seriously think about starting a business like that. I remember reading about two women here in Portland, that will plant your vegetable garden and take care of it for a fee. They had more business then they knew what to do with. Just an idea.

yes, there is a growing trend with what is known as "garden coaches"/the planning of back yard gardens as well as giving folks advice on easy to grow different landscaping plants for their yards.

There was an article in the Oregonian on a woman that taught classes on urban gardening, canning and food preserving here in Portland. She did not call it home ec but something similar to life style classes. She made the comment that every home has a guardian. She mentioned that for so long no one was ever home - people were busy with soccer games, work, the gym, etc. But now people are coming back to the home and at least one person is the guardian - the one that maintains the garden, keeps the home stock full of food, cleaned, etc. Kinda what our grandmothers and mothers did. Since individuals are coming back to this - many have never learned to sew or preserve food or have a vegetable garden and they are looking to learn how. She said it was a growing business for her. Just think of the knowledge the farm girls from this site could pass on to people - WOW!

You have a great idea there! I personally know several families that would love this service. If I didn't have enough taking care of my own garden, I'd think about it.

I always thought it would be a good business to offer to build a raised bed, plant the plants & even help maintain if the people wanted. YOu could offer various gardens, herb, salsa, canning, flower etc.
