OK, so I don't have a lot of $$ to invest in dozens of plants, but I did have some flower seeds hubby bought me. We have clayish dirt in the backyard, so I tilled it up and mixed it with Ortho Garden soil. Not a lot, but hopefully enough.
Anyway, I was poking some holes so I could put seeds in, and my 8 yr old wanted to help. He helped by just opening the envelopes and shaking all the miniature seeds everywhere! So much for the holes! I just did my best to add another layer of dirt and pack it down a bit with my boot, then watered lightly...do you think the seeds will still grow?

It'll be a 'surprise' garden, not sure what ended up where. RANDOM seems to be the name of the game this year!

I bet it will look very sweet, all the more because you two did it together :)

I can imagine a beautiful garden with those varieties. Maybe your little helper will be a future gardener.

We 'sprinkled' seeds of marigolds, pansies, cosmos, lupine, and a couple of other seed packs. I bought some from a home and garden show, they were Italian species, but the guy assured me that they'd grow here in Northern California. That iffyness combined with my son's planting skills have left me skeptical, lol, but excited!

I find adding sand to my heavy clay soil helps a lot too and it is really cheap too. Think of your new garden as an eclectic mix of flowers and enjoy whatever comes up.
