Hi FarmGirls!

I know that everything I have read/heard says to plant garlic in the fall. I live in Spokane, WA and wonder if I could sneak some in the garden now? I also have a friend up by Detroit, MI and he wanted to plant some, so I told him I thought we are both too late, but I would ask. So what do you think?

Also he wants to plant horseradish - I don't know about that, but I would imagine he could plant that in the spring?

Any advice appreciated! Judy

Thank you. We farm amoung hundreds of farmers so it doesn't hurt to have a silly name (it times like these it seems like everyone is looking for a laugh).

You are right they don't ship garlic until the fall but it's good idea to order it now because it isn't unheard of to sell out of the great varities.

Best,
Heide

First ... I LOVE that Nude Food Farm slogan!
Second, I've tried to grow horseradish and the *old* farmer I got it from warned me about it, but it never did a thing ... and he's been growing it for years!
Third, I wish I'd have seen this before ordering! I passed on the garlic because they all said plant in the fall so I just assumed that is when they would ship it to me

Not only are they a wealth of information, they also have one of the largest varieties of organic bulb stock we have ever seen.

Hey Judy,
I'll have to watch your "crop" to see about planting garlic.
I did plant some back in Calif, and it never got very big, but still tasted well.
How's life in town? How did ya do on your test last week?

Well thanks again! I did go out this afternoon and put about 20 cloves of garlic in the thawed raised bed. Keeping my fingers crossed. J

Judy ~ If you *can* get out to your yard and the ground's not still frozen like my yard, then by all means. I know here (I'm a county over from you) it's just better to get it in the ground in October to give the cloves time to root out so you have a better shot at normal-sized garlic heads by the time they're ready to harvest because of our short-ish season. Otherwise you'll end up with something that looks more like a kid-kitchen toy than a head of garlic for eating. Yummy, but small.

Well, Laurie and Diana, THANK YOU! I will plant my garlic this week - yippee!!! I really wanted to have garlic this year. And Michele, I will tell my friend by Detroit to try planting some now and then to plant the middle of October later on.
I will also warn him about the horseradish. My neighbor has plenty of that so I won't need to plant any :-)
Thanks, FarmGirls! I knew I could count on you! Judy

Planted it last year in spring and it did really well. I think we are close in our planting zones.
