Hope my farmgirl friends can help me out. I'm probably jumping the gun here but.....I planted roses last year, mostly Rugosa's, one Knockout, couple climbers and 5 or 6 small shrub. The roses that are completely bare of snow (!!), still have dead leaves on them, actually they all do. First of all, do I need to remove these, and when, or will they fall off?? Next, when do we prune over here?? I'd have them done at our other house on the west side by now. Also, some of my stems are pretty black, but here and there on my Knockout, I can see a tiny bit of life, like leaf buds!! Do I just have ants in my pants, or what??!!

I live about 120 miles south of you and I don't prune mine until at least April 1. It works great for me and my roses are always very nice. My Mom told me a long time ago to wait until then to prune no matter what my neighbors were doing. There's too much danger of a late freeze here and it can hurt them more if you've already pruned them.

Isn't it fun to pull them out? When we moved to the country I got to pull some out with the pickup. Shrubs too!

Roses are a great thing to take that Spring Fever out on. We live between the Tri Cities and Prosser and had a heck of a winter. Just last week my husband and I tied 14 of our huge rose bushes to the bumper of our car and pulled them out. I didn't even prune them. However if you like where your bushes are, then I suggest to prune them now to take the shape you want to train them. If you have any leaves that look like "black spot" on them you want to pull them off and throw them in your trash (don't compost them, they could spread the mold). Best of luck, Heide
