Ok here's my situation. We bought this acre 20 yrs ago and built the house. The lot was heavily wooded forest, mainly oak trees. I've never been able to get anything to grow except the shrubs around the house. We just cut down enough space for the house and the back yard has the septic system under it. Not alot of sun...
So I've been wanting to get back to gardening, and since I know this ground isn't going to grow anything I'm thinking raised beds with soil brought in. Hubby has already said he isn't helping with any of it so it's my project.
I think my biggest question is how successful I'll be with the limited sunshine...I mean, we get some, but we get alot of shade too.
Opinions/suggestions from all you experts out there??? |

There are a lot of things you could plant...are you thinking of flower or veggie gardens? I know my grandmother had a pretty shady lawn and she always had nastertiums (spelling?), irises,hostas, bluebells, etc. Usually on the seed packets it will say if the flower likes sunny or shade.
As for veggies...we have a lot of the same problem here, I'm in Maine and in a pretty wooded area myself. We actually had some topsoil DUMPED on our backyard and then we planted our veggie garden on that by cutting ledges into the pile and adding some rocks for support. We planted corn on top, tomatoes, basil, cukes, squash, brocc., we kept some open paths up the mound so we could climb it and water/weed (on occassion) and it worked really well. People thought we were crazy b/c gardens are supposed to be flat but our 'hill garden' actually helped with drainage (lots of ppl lost crop to mold b/c of a very wet season) AND it's elevation made it a sunnier spot than it would have been had it been ground level. I'm not expert, I'm a try it and see if it works...this did work for us though :) |
