Happy Valentines Day Eve fellow gardeners! I have a question. What are you all using for walking path covers for weed control? I have two goats, who BTW do not eat everything in site. I feed them alfalfa hay/grass. They eat a portion of it but will not eat the straw part of it. Can I use that left over part as walking path cover in my veggie garden or will I have alfalfa growing in the veggies the following year? Or can I sterilize it? If so, I would think putting a black plastic cover over it would sterilize it.

Thanks gals I am going to try the carpet and use the hay left overs for mulch under the plants. I will let you know how it turns out. Oh BTW, I am feeding less to the goats and they are eating alot more of their old 'cast aways'.

I just watched the neighborhood on trash days and got 2 big carpets that were 12 by 12 people had thrown out. Dont matter how dirty they were as they were for outside. I picked up a smaller one this winter for an area of my yard I will be doing here soon . It is insane all the polk root and poison ivy that grows up in the yard. But my yard was once part of an old pig farm that they tunred into a subdivision years ago. carpet has been only way to kill it out.

I use old carpet down in sections of the yard last year to kill out the poiosn ivy and weeds that come up. I havent planted veggies over it but i have covered it with dirt and then put in flower beds .. Here you can see the carpet i laid down...http://tribalwitch.blogspot.com/2008/04/one-day-it-will-be-all-pretty.html then this next one shows it covered over with wood chip with a wire enclosed bed of strawberries off to side of it. I have a big area for my picnic table and all that id wood chip and dont have to be mowed. This year i will be expanding this area.http://tribalwitch.blogspot.com/2008/05/almost-done.html

Hey! I like the old carpet idea. I'm going to be ripping some carpet out and that would be a great recycling idea for it instead of hauling it off to the dump. And it would make the walkways cushier so kneeling won't be so hard on the knees!

I read somewhere.. probly Country Woman or the like.. that someone used carpet scraps. Their carpet got water damage or it was time to get new. Instead of hauling it to the dump, they just cut it in strips and laid it down in the garden rows. I'm sure it kept the weeds down, and the ground still moist when it got wet.
The papers seem a good idea too tho!

Yes straw like for bedding. I used it when I had chickens. I had some left over and used it I also used grass clippings on the paper and it worked good too

did you use actual straw like for bedding or the remiander of the hay? I dont think its the same stuff

Last year I put down 2 layers of newspaper under some straw for the walkway and for weed control I was very pleased. The soil stayed wet longer and the weeds did not come up and the straw did not sprout like it did the last year. Then when I tore up the garden and tilled everything it was just was chewed up and put back into the soil. I have saved all my papers for the year and and going to do it again.
