Hey there farmgirls-
I am just wondering if any of you share seeds- I would love to start my first garden with 'all' farmgirl flowers. I would be happy to pay postage or make a trade for a walnut pincushion or some other 'little' I can make. I do not know where to start as I only have a little organic container garden (and many of those were plants- not seeds). We are buying our first house-small farm this spring and I want to start dreaming!
I already have some of Frannie's Sunflowers from Kentucky---- can't wait for your advice as to when to sprout them indoors, etc. (Also- what are good plants to have around little ones- my girl will eat almost anything in the ground so I want to be sure I am not planting anything poisonous)
Be Well, Rebekka

Rebekka -

You are too kind. I love sharing plants, I guess I get it from my mother and my grandmother. Alot of the plants I have in my yard came from them and the neighbor. I hate to see plants go to waste. Sharing the lilac will help it's legacy go on because I hate to say it, whenever we get the money to finish the remodel on our house the bush will have to go, it is in the wrong place. I will however dig as many starts as I can for myself before we have it removed, but that won't be for at least another 3 to 5 years - so plenty of time to share. Please post pictures when things start to take off.

LOL Anne

I just want to say thanks Anne for the wonderful Lilac shoot! This will be a great addition as lilacs are truly my favorite...hopefully by summers end I will have pictures to show everyone my farmgirl garden (and I am sure many of you will recognize the flowers and vegi's!)
I will have to find a way to post a picture of Anne's mail art- with a beautiful garden theme and a sweet flower fairy inside...there is also the most delicate beeded flower on the envelope...what a nice treat.
Blessings, Rebekka

Jane -

Sorry all the other seeds I had left that weren't claimed by Farmgirls went to my husband's new garden writer. Ed has been slow to send more, but I am sure during March we will start to see packages from him again with seeds. When I get more I will post again. Stay tuned.

Hi everyone!
Seems that I posted in the wrong area for seed swap. But I finally found you.
I have the following seeds to swap :
Dill seeds
Napa cabbage seeds
small amount of okra left
kidney bean seeds
Old fashioned white gladiola seeds from my Granny's garden

Would love to swap for Anne's fennel, husk tomato or artichoke seeds if there is something you could use that I have?

Jane

Is it ok to swap opened seed packages here? I have seeds in my garage dating back to 1994... LOL!I would not swap old seeds, although sometimes I plant them just to see if they will germinate...

I thought I could avoid this in the future if I planted my six seeds from the 2006 package and swapped the rest of the 20000 seeds in the package.

how are you all packaging your seeds? Just putting them in an envelope and mailing them? Is there a risk of them getting crushed in postal equipment?

Some of the tiny seeds I thought about sticking to the back side of a post-it note- has anyone tried that? Would the glue affect the seed?

Jan -

Wonderful. I am also getting the "itch" to plant, but with all of the rain we have been having lately, I can't even go out and do any winter clean up - way too soggy.

Anne, thank you so much. I got my seeds in the mail yesterday. I can't wait to get out there and start planting!! Only four more months to go.
Jana Posted - Jan 28 2006 : 7:34:07 PM
I think this would be great also! Often I buy packets of seeds and don't use them all, or think of saving seeds and don't because I don't have anyone to swap with. I'm in western Wisconsin, so I don't really get to planting until late April or May and lots of things not until June as our climate is a bit severe.

You know what...if no one else claims the chard or pak choi I would love to try growing them here..used to have good luck with them when I lived in Calif..and I love them for stir fry..and the chard is so pretty growing too!!
Purple carrots?? I bet kids would love that!!

Here is what is left on my list plus some new ones listed below.

1 packet - Swiss Chard "bright lights" - Aunt Jenny
1 packet - Flowering Cabbage & Flowering Kale mix
1 packet - Artichoke "green globe improved"
1 packet - Florence Fennel "finocchio"
1 packet - Ground Cherry "husk tomato"
1 packet - Rock Garden "low growing flower mixture"
1 packet - Godetia "double azalea mix"
1 packet Pak Choi - Bok Choy/Chinese Mustard - Aunt Jenny
1 packets - winter squash "delicata"

NEW FROM ED

1 big packet Peas "eclipse"
1 packet Carrot - "Purple Haze Hybrid" - Aunt Jenny - according to Ed this was the 2006 All American Selections winner. The 10 to 12 inch smooth purple carrots taper to a point and reveal a bright orange center when cut. The best color is maintained when carrots are eaten fresh from the garden, or when used raw in salads or cole slaw. They cook quickly and the color will remain. They have a sweet flavor

I have a packet saved for myself and thought I would try them, purple is my favorite color, so why not have purple carrot too

I also have an odd packet from Renee's Garden (not sure where I got them) of Jewel-toned Bell Peppers, Crimson, Gold & Orange.

Just e-mail me if you are interested in anything on the list. If anyone has extra seeds of the "Golden Jubilee" large tomatoe, that is one thing I would be interested in. Again, don't be shy, just ask and I will send. I am very happy to share.

Anne

I'm glad I'm not the only with spring fever already! Lacy, enjoyed your blog, I hope you will post a pic of your 1915 house, how neat! I'd be happy to send you some seeds for containers on that big front porch. And Jan, I'd be happy to send you some seeds too, veggies or flowers? Share the wealth I say! Chasity, glad you got the seeds, if you can't use any maybe you can swap them. Think spring!

I'm just getting into this topic today. I've been garden-less for quite a few years and would like to start up again. I don't have any seeds to share, but if anyone has anything left over to share that would just go to waste, I'd be interested. I can supply the postage. If you have anything, you can email me. Thanks.

I live in the city, and will be soon moving to a 1915 house (still in the city, but with a BIG farmgirl front porch!) Does anyone have any seeds that will work in containers? I'd like to start some gardening, but since I'm sans land, would like to try on my front porch...

On the same idea as the wiskey barrel, I saw in the Garderner's Supply catalog a type of recycled rubber container, kinda like a barrel, but with no top or bottom. It had holes punched through out it and you filled it with dirt and while you filled you planted potatoes. The potato tops grew through the holes and when it was time to harvest, you collasped the barrel so all the dirt fell out and you could pick up the spuds. I thought that was a great idea. Didn't take up much room, but you could get alot of pototoes in a small area. I have been thinking hard about that one, because when I do potatos, it really does take some room up from my small garden. Just another thought.

In a gardening book it showed growing two sugar baby watermelons in half a wiskey barrel. You set it on top of another half of a wiskey barrel set upside down. I'm going to try that this year since I won't have time to amend the soil and plow, as we will be just moving in our new house.
