The first day of Spring for 2009 is March 20th! That is 52 days from now!

Some of us will get to plant a little earlier and some will have to plant a little later. But I will be starting plants inside here soon so the will be nice and big- ready to be planted out side!

Lillian, you are so funny! Couldn't even wait for the new year to start your countdown, huh?

I'm already feeling behind so I'm not counting down. I keep thinking "I should have done this already" and "I should have done that." Guess I need to get that garden journal started..............

God bless -

I'm going to have to find out what the Tulsa County Ag Extension's got. Thanks for all the good advice.

Belle, your planting dates are especially helpful, thank you!

Melody are you in the UP? My boyfriend went to school at Michigan Tech and talks about the UP all the time. :D

Mellisa suprises can be good! Joy what part of So. KY are you in? I live in Scottsville and don't know what I would do w/o our Extension office! They help a farmgirl in training out so much! And speaking of winter weather, it's calling for ice tonight and in the morning. UGH! I guess I will have to snuggle under a blanket tonight and read a gardening book!

Technically the last day for frost here in Missouri is April 15th, but I usually wait til the end of April or beginning of May to plant, because Mother Nature doesn't always listen to the County Extension office...LOL!

I could really use a bit of spring in January! lol This wintery weather is getting so depressing...I just pulled all my seeds and bulbs out this morning just to look at them! I really wish I could remember what some of these are that I saved...I must have been in a hurry last fall and forgot to mark them - oops! I guess I'll have summer surprises!

Boy am I hoping for an early spring here in the Chicago area! It has been another super cold and snowy winter so far. I have a lot to prepare for on the first day of spring. It is the Persian New Year, Nowrooz, for us. I have lots to do to prepare my table, make the food and get our grass boats ready. I'll explain later in the holiday section!

Alee- On Chrismas Day I changed my screen saver from "Merry Christmas" to "Countdown to Spring".

You can't tell that I have cabin fever, can you?

I don't plant until around Mother's Day here. We could still get a frost/freeze up until then.

I need a nifty little countdown for my blog.... off to look!

I can smell the freshly dug dirt already!

If the snow is gone (I often help it with a shovel), I can plant the cool weather stuff in April. I can plant everything else by mid-May but, have to keep the frost covers handy and watch the weather channel without fail until the end of June. My first year up here, I lost my entire garden after a heavy frost on June 21 and had to go buy new plants.

I work at our local extension office. We have lots of farmers already bringing in soil samples. The next few months will be very busy. I love my job. Extension offers so much FREE info and farm services. Our county is even doing the soil testing this year for FREE! It was $4 per sample. Girls also remember most Extension offices offer free canner testing (well in KY anyway). the site for our local office. http://ces2.ca.uky.edu/wayne/

I work as staff assistant now, for 3 yrs I worked with the EFNEP (Expanded Food and Nutrition Education). Now I do a lot for Homemakers in our county. For example the monthly newsletter. In fact, I have to get Feb. in the mail tomorrow.

I'm so ready for spring! My list of wants is reeeaaallly long! I haven't even checked when the last frost date for my area is though. I guess I better call good ol' Steve at the ext. office tomorrow. I always start seed and buy transplants from the local Mennonites. There is nothing like digging in dirt is there?

Best farm wishes

Amanda, I am just 75 miles north of you. Our last frost date is around April 15. I Plant potatoes the 3rd week in March. Onions the 4th week in march. I plant peas, lettuce and radishes the 1st or 2nd week in April. Unless we are having a really warm spring, I don't plant greenbeans, corn or squash until about the 3rd week in April. I don't set out my tomatoes or peppers until the 1st of May. As you can see, our plant dates runs about 2 months. Depending on the weather and what you are planting.

I would call your ag extension office. They should have a pretty good idea- and some offices have websites now!

I can't WAIT for spring! Where do you find out the target date for outside planting in your area? The ag extension? Showing my ignorance here, but in the past I've only bought transplants from the local herb festivals. This will be the first try with seeds!
