I am so in need of a gardening fix. We are about to receive a frigid Arctic Blast here....so the ground is frozen and gardening seems so far away. I decided to try growing sprouts as a tasty, healthy food source during this unrelenting Winter. So far so good. If you are interested....here are directions:

Ah-ha! Sunflower sprouts (and a long list of others at the bottom of the page). I'm off to do some sprout gardening. :)

Mmm great minds think alike...so, what are your favorite sprouts? I bought some sunflower sprouts and they were just so good. But I haven't tried sprouting those...anyone have experience with sunflower or other unusual sprouts? Am I remembering pumpkin sprouts? Have you heard of/tried those? There must be a spot online that lists lots of potentially delicious sprout sources. I like collecting seed from the garden so I know it hasn't been treated with something funky I wouldn't want to eat. Growing my own sunflower and pumpkin seeds for sprouts would be so easy...and productive!

I saw a show on PBS about hydroponics to increase green space and increase quality nutrition as we grow and have less good soil available...they were sprouting wheat, and it has so much more nutrition once sprouted.

I got my sprouting seeds at the Health Market section of Hy-Vee, so check your supermarkets. The Hy-Vee that I go to, the seeds and spices and things are in big jugs, and you put as many as you want to buy in plastic baggies and weigh them and it prints a ticket so they can be rung up. You all have inspired me to get making some. And BTW, I just follow MaryJane's instructions in her Lifebook and use empty margarine or Cool Whip tubs.

For tomorrow and its needs I do not pray, but keep me, guide me, love me, Lord just for today.

That is how I do it, too. And...I just checked the little seeds...their hulls are open now, and little sprouts are emerging. Hoooooraaayyyy...Spring is on its' way!

No Lowes here. Maybe Home Depot or Menards?

If I can get my counters cleared off.... I think I'll drag my sprouter out of the pantry. I love sprouts on my sandwiches or in my salads.

I didn't know that about broccoli sprouts! I wonder if Whole Foods has them - the only place I can find seeds locally.

I am trying this according to the directions of the website that I posted....and keeping my fingers crossed. If I have no luck...I will be ordering a sprouter from somewhere!

I have a need for a gardening fix too! Working on repotting house plants, geranium cuttings, and waiting for some seeds to arrive in the mail for starting.

I love growing sprouts. I also have broccoli sprouts growing. A couple years back (when they were cheaper) I bought one of these sprouters and I really love it.

I have broccoli seeds in my homemade sprouter. I read that one broccoli sprout has the same amount of anti-oxidants as a whole plant...imagine that!

I too get in the need of a garden fix so I repot my house plants and get them ready for the next year. I think I also saw on the forum some one took the root parts of the little green onion and replanted and they grew. A good carrot top is fun to watch also and sweetpotato wines are pretty too.

I need some dirt

Bev, thanks for the reminder. I haven't done sprouts for years. Next trip to town, I'm going to the health food store and get some alalfa seed. I'll drag out my sprouting trays and get them cleaned up. Love sprouts on salads and sandwiches.
