Has anyone ever tried to grow celery. Is it worth the effort?
We pretty much grow everything else and decided to maybe try this for something different.
We got the 2006 Seeds of Change catalog yesterday, and we also get Seed Saver but to date have never seen celery seed for growing or really, much on growing it anyway.

I have grown celery a few years ago..when I lived in a celery growing area (central coast of calif) where you could see whole fields of it growing. I did start with nursery seedlings though. It turned out nice...but like Diane said don't let them dry out..seems they need good drainage too..we had sandy soil there and that was good. Here..I don't know if it would grow well, but maybe I should try it. You can't beat that taste celery adds to things!

I have not tried it but was told that if you keep building up the soil level around the celery as it grows as well as bunching it you will get the picturesque celery of the grocery stores. Supposedly the less of it exposed to the light the more tender and juicy the stalks. Maybe I will give it a try this summer.

I have grown celery for a few years. I certainly never manage to get the "art" sold in grocery stores, but we do get a usable product. Celery is a very heavy feeder, ie. lots of compost and nitrogen. Never let your celery transplants dry out or become rootbound, particularly in the seedling stage or it will bolt. I put those velcro ties around the plants to hold them together and blanch the inner stalks. Even if your celery turns out a little tough, it can still be used in cooked things.
I wouldn't hesitate to give it a try Anna. I'm always trying something new..sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't...but it's always fun and the seed is cheap.
