I am deciding between thornless and thorny berry bushes- any experience out there to help me decide?
I plan on putting them in over the next few days, so I'll be calling my local nurseries-
I am on the Gulf Coast and many varieties are native but I will be purchasing mine rather than digging them up in the woods.

I have both kinds of blackberries, thornless are wonderful...no thorns, except ONE BIG THING.....they (the kind I have anyways)DO NOT like direct sun, they just wither and die in the summer, also wont produce berries, the thornless that are in  the shade of a big tree, do wonderful...my thorned berries, grow no matter where they are..although, I do prefer thornless...I also have thornless raspberries, wonderful!!!

I will take the thornbushes any day. I just put on a long sleeve shirt.. & pick away.. We planted some last year so hope we get lots of berries this year.

The parish sprays poison on everything wild around here. We have serious mosquito and weed problems,being in the deep south- thats why we planted our own.
Hope we can keep them from spraying!

I was going to order a few bushes this year of the thornless, just to see how they compare (tastewise) to our wild brambles in the lower back yard. We just suit up and get those berries--my husband is a master at this point! I think he secretly enjoys the challenge :) |

As kids, we used to pick wild blackberries around my Grandmothers farm in Arkansas. I remember the thorns but it was worth it for a taste of her blackberry cobbler! HEAVEN! As an adult I've planted the thronEless variety and never thought they held a candle to the ones of my youth. Don't know if it's because of the location (Ark vs. Colo) or wild vs. cultivated or youth vs. age?

We have a large amount of wild blackberries and cant keep up with them when they start to ripen. But ours have thorns...My husband does most of the dirty work...We got a thornless bush and planted it in a large container. We will see how it goes with it.

I got thornless last year, just because I don't like having to wear gloves in the garden. And my kids tend to run into things in the yard. But hubby's boss says the thorny ones taste better, and we may get a few stalks from her this coming year. We'll see. I just make jam or feed them to the kids anyway.

Thornless are so much easier to pick and wrap canes. The berries are excellent. MB
