My husband has seeds from some egg gords that he got off the internet. I want to know when and how to plant these seeds. And how long it takes them to mature from seeds to maturity? Yes, I know it is unusual for my husband to get these on-line. Here is his website: www.greateggspections.net ....take a look...I want to grow some of the gords if I can.
Thanks
Deborah

I don't have any Beverley or I'd send you some. But I did see them in this year's Stokes catalogue.

That picture said it was in the cuke family. how interesting? Does anyone ever have any apple gourd seeds they would like to share? I have seen them but never grown any but this next summer we have a great big open field and I want to grow pumpkins and barrel gourds and thought other ones would be cool too.

I seed mine into peat pots, about 4 weeks before putting them into the garden. I grow them in the same kind of soil you would for cukes or squash, with a shovel full of well-composted manure under each plant. Our soil is very typical marine silt here.
They usually will dry out in about six months. Mine from this year are going to take a little longer as I don't have a place to lay out that many to dry, so they are in the cool plant room. But if you have a warm dry place, it should take less time. Sometimes they will really get moldy too, but as long as they are hard to the touch and not soft and squishy, they will be okay. The mold actually can make for a really nice mottled appearance if you stain them.
Hope this helps!

Diane, Thanks..Can I seed them inside until it gets warm enough to tranplant outside? And 100 would be great...so my husband is saying. lol...Do you know what they need for soil conditions?? We have red clay soil.. yuck...we really have to condition the soil for veggies, etc....And my husband is asking how long for the to dry out to do something with them..
Thanks

How many egg gourds do you want is the question!? Just a heads up that we put in five plants last spring and got well over 100!
Your growing season would be significantly different than ours Deborah, but here they were in the ground the middle of May and we picked them all the middle of September. And they would still be producing if we hadn't finally pulled the plants. Very prolific they are!
My daughter cut the tops off of some, turned them upside down and made Christmas bells. She stained them with semi-transparent shoe dye so they look wooden. They're quite pretty.
Good luck with them, they were fun!
Diane
