Posted - Nov 16 2008 : 04:18:08 AM She's moving out of her house nad dug up all her raspberries and gave them away to friends. I plant mine today. She said within a year or two I should have a couple of bushes that fruit twice a year. This is the first actual crop I've ever grown myself except African violets. I hope to get some tomato plants or something next year, but I'm still quite the gardening novice. This is so exciting, though. |

Posted - Nov 22 2008 : 03:10:31 AM That's really neat!
We started out with 5 little sticks. This year I was almost ready to order more, when all of a sudden little shoots were everywhere, and the next thing, we had gone from bare ground to a patch so think you can't even walk through it now!
enjoy!!

Posted - Nov 16 2008 : 1:18:00 PM Alee, thanks for the tip. I already know how to make pies and jam, so I figure I know what to do with them. In a couple of summers, I'll probably ask for canning tips for the jam.
Deb, I have to say that I was a little alarmed at how small the raspberry bush looked. My neighbor said she had to cut it down to balance out the roots that got cut back, so it just looks like a couple of sticks. I thought, "Will this really grow?" Hopefully it will. Watch, I'll be the first woman in history to kill a raspberry bush.
Michelle, the woman who gave the raspberry bush doesn't live next door, she lives around the corner, but I'd be willing to share raspberry bushes with neighbors if/when mine get off the ground.

Posted - Nov 16 2008 : 08:37:02 AM Fantastic! I love neighbors who pass goodies over the fence. I'm sorry to hear she is moving. Maybe the new folks will appreciate in a few years when you pass a stick over from your own raspberry patch. :) Be sure to pass the great story. Plants with a story are extra special.

Posted - Nov 16 2008 : 06:00:12 AM What a wonderful gift! Our neighbor gave us 2 "sticks" a few years ago that were raspberry plants. When we stuck them in the ground they looked like nothing. You should see our patch now, it's thriving!
What I've found around here is that people promptly dig up any and all plants in their yards when they move into a new home. Not knowing what they have. When we bought our home I asked the women who lived here to take me on a tour of the yard and tell me everything that she had planted. I didn't want to accidentally dig anything up that I might want.
Your raspberry's are going to do wonderful!

Posted - Nov 16 2008 : 05:55:55 AM Yea Amanda!, raspberries are very easy. I have had huge success with mine being mulched with straw. Every year you will get new plants and trust me, before long you will have a raspberry patch!

Posted - Nov 16 2008 : 05:41:25 AM Amanda- That is awesome! Raspberries are so delicious when fresh picked! And if there starts to be to many to handle when they are becoming ripe, you can freeze them in a single layer at a time and pour in to a storage container (like a freezer bag) and you will have frozen raspberries for when ever you want! No more paying $6 for 12 ounces at the grocery store for frozen raspberries!!
