Hi JO! I have had mine bloom many different times, including Easter!
Just depends on the environment and bud set. Are you watering too much? If it is putting out alot of green growth it might not have enough energy to set flower buds even with a short day (light) situation. Also, if you have fertilized it, make sure you use something where the middle # is higher N_P_K , that is the (phosphorus) that's aids bud/flower development. I hope you get some flowers!

hi marcia, well it has a good size pot, a clay one! it is doing good, it bloomed last xmas but nothing since. i have it in a southern window, so it gets light, but not direct light i guess, but like i say my african vilots doo wonderfull in that window. i don't supoose it would hurt to move it around, it can't be root bound yet. or at least i don't think it would be. a fellow gave it to me and it was in bloom when he gave it to me so i do know that thing does bloom, lol~ maybe i'll try to find on the net. somewhere i don't have a lot of lighted windows here either. thanks though for the info though. jo~~`

Jocelyn,
Patience! Keep doing what you're doing. Put it outside for the summer like I said. How big a pot is it in? I really think being root bound is a key factor. My mom and I were just talking about this last night. I've never given much thought to the light issue. I don't have really good choices for windows in my house either. In the winter they are all in a room that gets mostly morning light....a north eastern exposure. But I just recently moved one into a completely different area and it's blooming now. go figure! It blooms 4-5 times a year anyway.
Maybe yours won't bloom until fall. Marcia

Someone mentioned shorter days, cooler temps...I seem to remember my mom and grandma shutting theirs up in closets before Christmas to get them to bloom during the holiday season. I soooo want a Christmas cactus!!! We've moved a bit in the past couple of years, and I've managed to kill off all of the plants I used to have....my thumb turned black for awhile, now I'm hoping it's turned green again. I'm going to transplant a few different plants from my yard into pots tomorrow afternoon, so we'll see. LOL

The end will justify the pain it took to get us here.

no blooms yet, i was a bit dissapointed, but it looks good, the farm house i live in isn't really overly warm, i moved it around a bit rearranging furniture ect. for xmas tree, and such. i wonder if that would bother it? i know my ahoya when i moved it i was told it stalls it from blooming, so, i was wondering maybe that would affect the xmas cactus? but all in all it does look healthy, maybe i'll get some blooms yet?thanks for the info girls, i'll keep u updated if it does bloom! oh boy! will i be a happy camper.tee hee~~~ as i just love them jo!

There's no such 'animal' as a male Christmas cactus. Blooming is triggered by shorter days and cooler temps. If yours does not bloom, it may be because it is getting too much artificial light or too much warmth. Marcia's experience with the plants on the porch for the summer shows, too, that the xmas cactus likes those long summer nights and then the shorter days in fall will cause buds to form.

The clay pot should not be too dry for the plant. But don't withhold water unless it is after flowering. Hope you see some buds soon! But if you don't, then get it outside next summer and fertilize then. Good luck!

Christmas cactuses really aren't all that delicate. I have 12-15 of them...all sizes and colors. Most of mine bloom several times a year. All of them are blooming right now and have been for about a month. They all live outside on my front porch from mid-May until about mid-October. I water them just like I water all of my other plants, inside or outside. They fall over and get blown around on the porch...pieces break off, etc. They seem to love it. The only thing I can say is I think they like to be root bound somewhat. If you repot them only go up an inch to an inch and a half bigger pot or they won't bloom for awhile. They're my favorite houseplant. Good luck!

Hi, Jo -- Here's some information from P. Allen Smith's web newsletter regarding Christmas/holiday cactus:
--------------------
Water - In spite of its appearance and common name, schlumbergera is not a cactus. When in bloom these plants should be watered about once a week or when the top half of the soil in the container becomes dry. Lack of water will cause the flower buds to drop. After the flowers fade stop watering the plant for about 6 weeks. This will allow the plant to rest. During the spring and summer keep the plant consistently moist. Root rot from over watering is a common problem with these plants.

Fertilizing - When new growth emerges in the spring, begin a fertilizing with an all-purpose houseplant food mixed at half strength. Continue to do this once a month until October.
--------------------

So, it's just a month and a half to withhold water from the cactus. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the topic. I wasn't aware that I could share my cactus with others. I think that if I have space in a few of my gift baskets, I could just add a baby cactus in a decorated paper cup to be the finishing touch I need!

you can be oh so smart, or you can be oh so positive. I wasted a lot of time being smart I prefer being positive.

Just take off a "branch" and plunk the bottom leaf into some moist soil. If your house is dry, slipping it into a plastic bag until it roots will help, but I think you'll find they root quite easily.

I HAVE IT IN A CLAY POT AND I WONDER IF MAYBE IT SHOULD BE IN A PLASTIC ONE? I HEAR THEY DON'T LIKE ALOT OF WATER, SOMETHING LIKE THE ALOE PLANT EH? We have a few winter-hardy hollies here in the Chicago area, namely 'China Boy'/'Girl', 'Blue Boy'/'Girl', 'Blue Prince/Princess'.

I could not find any holly cultivar named 'combo' in my reference books, so I'd guess this one is not hardy. You could repot and fertilize it in late spring and summer it outside, bringing inside to enjoy next holiday season.

THANK LOADS I DIDN'T SEE ON THE PACKAGE WHERE IT SAID PERIANEL SO I WAS REALLY WONDERING. IT SAYS COMBO THEN IT HAD A PICTURE OF POINSETTAS MIXED IN I THOUGH. MAYBE IT JUST MEANT U KNOW THAT U'D BE ABLE TO USE IT AS DECOR MIXED WITH POINSETTAS. ANYWAYS THANKYOU AGAIN! I WILL DO LIKE IT SAYS PLAT IN SPRING . OH IT SAID ENJOY FOR YRS. TO COME THAT'S WHY I THOUGHT MAYBE IT WOULD BE PERIN. IT DOES GET BAD HERE AT TIMES~ THANKS AGAIN JO!!
