Posted - Oct 12 2008 : 8:03:33 PM My husband and 2 of his buddies spent all day yesterday building a 200 sq ft, 2 room chicken coop for me!!!! It's gorgeous! We loaded up the kids and went to see the "chicken lady" and came home with 6 large birds, about 3 months old, and 4 cute little chicks! We have silkies, and a pheonix, and well....some with black/white spots, some with copper colored feathers...oh they are sooooo cute! I cant believe we spent over $200. on birds....but I think it will pay for itself in time with the cost of eggs going up! I feel like I have now lost all that was left of that "city girl"....so can I get a great big "Hee Haw" from y'all???? LisaLu

Posted - Oct 23 2008 : 04:02:03 AM HEE HAW - am so jealous! I'd love to have a hen or 2 (or 12)! Famous red heads - Ginger on Gilligan's Island, Lucille Ball. Queen Liz's hair is/was very auburn. Hey, if it turns out that one of your hens really isn't a hen, you could name him Prince Harry - now THAT'S a famous redhead! Oh, and another thought for famous red head girl names - pick any heroine from any trashy romance novel - most of them are redheads. My favorite one came from a book I can't even remember the title to, but the names of the characters (all place names - too cool!) influenced how I named my own kiddos! Anyway, her name was Tabrizia, which is the ancient capitol of Persia. And she had "fiery red flowing locks". Don't they all! LOL
Ok so I had to look this up on the net (I was too curious) - here are some more: Gillian Anderson, Anne Boleyn (one of Henry VIII's wives and QEI's mom), Carol Burnett, Margaret Sanger, Kirsten Dunst, Sarah Ferguson, Queen Elizabeth I, Rita Hayworth, Katharine Hepburn, Nicole Kidman, Cyndi Lauper, Bernadette Peters, Vicki Lawrence, Debra Messing, Bette Midler, Julianne Moore, Cynthia Nixon, Molly Ringwald, Julia Roberts, Ginger Rogers, Susan Sarandon, Ariel - The Little Mermaid, Wilma and Pebbles Flintstone - The Flinstones, Jessica Rabbit - Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, Daphne - Scooby Doo, Clarabell (played by Bob Keeshan): the red-haired clown on the "Howdy Doody" TV show, Little Orphan Annie, Cleopatra, Emily Dickinson. That oughta be enough to name a whole flock of hens!

Posted - Oct 23 2008 : 03:42:31 AM WOW!!!
Your hubby sounds as good as mine when without me asking just volunteered a part of is income tax check a few years ago and built our 12x12 super coop-----or million screw special that took 3 weekends to construct!
That's so cool!
This may be a bit late, but I hate those winds too. I lived in the desert near Palm Springs for 5 years and dreaded the Santa Anas. It made me uncomfortable on the insdie for some reason, and was bad when even the zoo animals would stand still and close their eyes against all the sand whipping around.
Now I know why Arabs wear the long robes and stuff over their faces!! |

Posted - Oct 13 2008 : 9:06:04 PM Ok, this is going to sound crazy....but I think I've fallen in love with a chicken! Britney follows me, she talks to me, she lets me pet her...the others are a little scared still, but not Britney! My husband came home with 4 more from one of his hispanic buddies, they raise those fighting cocks, and these cute hens needed a nice home. They seem a little agressive, but they had a really hard day today. Maybe they will mellow once they learn English! We are starting to think one of the fancy hens isn't a hen! I plan to research the breed tonight! That would surely mess up my plans! We need more names....

Posted - Oct 13 2008 : 09:33:59 AM Well, Hee Haw and yippie!!! Chickens are fun. Hope you get lots and lots of eggs.
Will they be free range at all? I let mine run all over. They get bugs and lots of grass. And before pigs, lots of scraps.
Good luck with them and have fun.
Kris
PS Ours have quit laying. I guess they are molting. I did get 1 egg yesterday. I was SO HAPPY to get it. I actually had to buy yucky eggs at Dollar General so I could make cornbread. |

Posted - Oct 13 2008 : 07:38:59 AM Thank you girls! Well we all survived the night. We are having high winds, and dry Santa Anna conditions...I was so worried about the hens, we didn't have time to bring in any hay, and the boxes aren't done yet, I was worried about them, but they did just fine. I'm looking forward to reading up on them. I have absolutely no idea what to do. I think I am more afraid of them, than they are of me. We are starting to name them....the blonde one is "Britney"...we are trying to come up with a few sassy names for the redheads. Do any of you know of any famous redheads that have been locked up? I'll post photos on my blog. I don't know how yet....maybe I'll stay inside today and figure it out! Any helpful hints would be appreciated! Hope you all have a great day! LisaLu
