the tips of my rosemary are turning brown, including full needles. I'm in a very dry climate and tried not to overwater, but did I manage to underwater it? there is none of hte white mildew that happens with rosemary sometimes. Any ideas?

Since I wrote this, I repotted and brought it inside. Though some leaves are brown and died, I do have new growth. So that is good. I water less often and more, so my fingers are crossed. I may try the sprout and start another plant. i like rosemary.

I have been growing rosemary for many years. I live in southern Ohio so I have not found a variety that overwinters in our hollow. Its just get to darn cold here. But I use to overwinter them in the house. Now I have a very small greenhouse (9' by 7'). Its small but I can afford to heat it. I only keep the temp about 45 degrees and up the tempature when I start tomato seeds and other stuff to put in the garden.

One thing I have learned about rosemary is that I always water it till it comes out the bottom of the pot. Just make sure it doesn't sit in the excess water. I always water it when the top starts to feel slightly dry. Rosemary will actually wilt on the ends if it get to dry but will ususally perk right up when watered. I also fertilize it lightly about once a month.Rosemary plants usally do best in ceramic, clay, or hypertufa pots. They really like the hpertufa pots. Some of my rosemary plants look like big bushes. Some of my plants are 5 and 6 years old. As you can tell I really love rosemary....lol. Its my favorite herb to cook with.

You might try propigating your rosemary plant before you lose it. Not sure whats wrong with it but it would be worth a try. I just cut about a 4 inch piece off and remove about 1 1/2 inches of needles from the bottom....also make sure you take a few cuttings. I put them in a clear cup with pearlite and water and keep them in a warm place in the kitchen or a greenhouse or whatever place thats good for you. It should start rooting in about 3 weeks. You can also place a baggie over the top if your house is really dry.

Anyway good luck with your plant. You might try cutting the brown parts off your plant and fertalize lightly if its dry.

take care
Linda

I brought one potted rosemary and a lavender in the house this year too...about a week ago. So far they look good. I hated to leave them out knowing they would die in the pots. I will mulch the ones in the ground. Sometimes they make it sometimes they don't overwinter. Good luck with yours!

i don't think we had any cold days before I got back, but hey in the mountains you can never tell. it's holding its own right now in the house. I'm hoping it lasts the winter.

Could it be frost..that is what my rosemary looks like when it gets "nipped" by frost.

oh I like how they have it as a hedge row..how nice..hmm maybe I will have to do that. as the rosemary grows so well for me here..but I'll be relocating a bit further south..hopefully I'll have the same luck there in slightly different soil.

I have believed that humidity in the air is necessary with rosemary, but I do not know much about them.

I love growing rosemary in the summer. I neglect them and keep the roots mulched. A woman who lived north of me, still in connecticut, had one survive a few winters near her house. Must have been the perfect protected spot.

I'm sharing a rosemary photo from our trip to Northern Italy to visit my husband's family. The rosemary in the photo is probably about 28 inches tall and seems to go on forever. That is my father in the background.

only water when the top 2 inches of soil feel dry. they don't like too much water...as they are a mediterranean plant.
I'd check the roots and see if the roots feel mushy..if so..then you'll need to dig it up and replant it in a drier area.
I only water mine here about once a week..if that...here in Florida..and ours is about 4 ft tall by 4 ft wide.
It really thrives much better in drier soils.

I have grown rosemary---lots of it, and this past summer just one of my plants decided to "give up the ghost" . . . i don't know why because she was standing next to her sisters and they are doing just fine. Only she started to turn brown

Is it a new plant? Is it hardy? Can it be frost bite? I have had rosemary in my herb garden for years, then it just dies. Now can't seem to get one to live for more than a year or so. There are several verities but only a couple that I know of that are winter hardy. Oh, I didn't answer your question. Guess it is cause I don't know.
