I have been reading MJF's idea book and she mentions in there Elderberries for making wine and jelly and I am from the north (michigan) and just have never seen them? Do they only grow in the south? Can I buy elderberry juice for making jelly? Does anyone have any answers for me? Thanks for any info. Beverley

I want to order some too. We had them everywhere in PA where I grew up. THey are great mixed with other berries for bumbleberry jam. Whatever berries you hve left in your freezer and throw them in. So yummy! I want to get them and red raspberries. Beware they spread and take over because of birds, at least they do not have thorns.:)

Bev, did you check out the elderberry plants on Ebay? I am thinking of purchasing more, they grow so fast and I just feel a strong attraction to them.

Beverley, I bought my elderberry plants, sambucus nigra variety on Ebay and they are soooo tall now! I am sure I will have tons of elderberries come next year and I can't wait. Look up some herbal recipes for making an elderberry syrup - I have all the makings but have not made it yet! They are excellent for the immune system! Good luck.

I lived most of my life in WV. They grew wild there. I haven't seen them yet, here in SC.

Thank you everyone for letting me know. I will have to look next spring in the seed catalogs and maybe they will have starter ones. Bev

There is elderberry vineyards in Kansas, I believe that's the same zone as Michigan.

It's terribly expensive to buy the juice. As it's very good for medicinal purposes. I would grow my own.

We actually had elderberry wine for our wedding. We loved it.

Elderberries grow wild here, too in zone 4 so, I think they would do fine in Michigan. I have also seen them in seed catalogs, but you'd have to plant a number of bushes to make it worth your while. The berries grow in bunches or umbels but the berries are very small. You can buy elderberry juice, but the last time I checked it was something like $9 for an 8oz bottle. Pretty spendy.

If you want them for cold and flu remedy you have to buy the variety Sambucus "Nigra" which is what grows wild here.

They grow wild here in north western Wisconsin. I make elderberry juice, and drink it up when anyone starts to feel cold coming on.

They grow wild here in the Pacific NW, but I have seen them in seed catalogs. I think they would grow in Michigan, but maybe it gets too cold in the winter. You'd have to find out what zone they grow in. I would google it and I bet you could find out.
