Posted - Sep 05 2008 : 09:24:53 AM So I have this tree in my yard of the farmhouse I am renting. It looks like there are pears all over it. They are about the size of a plum. Do I pick um or do they have to grow some more?? Can I make a pie or something? I would post a picture but I don't know how to do that on here... Thanks

Posted - Sep 10 2008 : 1:10:35 PM Our pears all ready at different times. The Barletts have all been picked, and I think I've only got a few more days to glean the orchard and get those canned. The Anjous are next, and then the Boscs.
Good luck with your pears, we've been eating ours like crazy!

Posted - Sep 07 2008 : 5:53:42 PM oh and large crockpot full of pears cooked down makes about 5 to 6 pints full.do not add any water or anything..the pears make their own "sauce" Mine were very juicy this year.

Posted - Sep 07 2008 : 5:50:41 PM I actually put the sliced pears into crockpot. Filled it nearly to the top..then took half a bag of real gingered candy pieces(it is just basically ginger cubes that are sugared...you can find these at health food stores and some grocery stores) then about 1 1/2 cup sugar. And about 1 tablespoon or so of cinnamon. Stir and set the lid on the crockpot. Set on high and let it all cook for about 4-6 hrs. ----------------- The 1st batch I took half of a package of cinnamon red hots and about 1 1/2 cup sugar and then the cinnamon about 1-2 tablespoons. same thing..let it cook down in crockpot. --------------- yum! Of course I only used the half bag of cinnamon red hots cause someone had gotten into them..ha. But actually it should have been the whole packet. ---------------- Good for over waffles, pancakes or as a dessert topping on icecream or as is.

Posted - Sep 07 2008 : 12:54:18 PM One of my favorites is pear relish. Pears, onions, peppers. Now that you have reminded me of pears, I'll have to check with daughter-in-law to see if she still has pears. Lets see, that would be after I do apples, apples, tomatoes, okra, apples and apples. This is what I look forward to all year?? I am about to give out (not up) and I keep picking stuff and bringing it in the house. |

Posted - Sep 05 2008 : 3:43:04 PM we have already harvested our pears here in Florida..and left them on the counter for about 2 weeks to finish ripening up. They are now a pretty golden yellow now. They are being peeled and sliced this afternoon/put into crockpot for about 4-6 hrs with cinnamon and sugar..then canned in jars with a hot water boil of 10 minutes.

Posted - Sep 05 2008 : 1:53:28 PM I think it is too early for pears. It is here in KS. You don't let pears ripen on the tree. Pick green and let rippen. Read that somewhere. They will be pretty yellow when ripe, I think. |

Posted - Sep 05 2008 : 12:16:17 PM A per is ripe when the skin next to the stem yields a bit when pressed with your finger. Can them. Make pear sauce. Cook them up with cloves and orange peel and freeze them. Yummy! Make pear tarts.....send some to me!

Posted - Sep 05 2008 : 10:12:50 AM I don't know if there's a rule, but I'd say pick one and see if it tastes good. If not, wait a week and try again.
Of course, that's assuming that you're sure they really are pears! If there's a local upick farm around, maybe you could snip off a small branch and take it over to compare with what they've got. |
