So sad

We plowed under the last of our tomatos and buried all the dead zucchini vines.

Out w/ the old and in w/ the new.

So, yesterday afternoon, hubby and I planted 300, yes, 300 collard plants and 75 cabbages!! Talk about a major leg workout!

I love the fall, but get kind of melancholy when all the yummy summer crops start to go away. That and when the sun starts to set earlier.

Sniff sniff. Just turned over my tomatoes and peppers. Getting ready to plant brussel sprouts, broccoli and turnip greens. Yes Ma'am!

Thank God I live in the country!

Yep,

Greens freeze well either blanched and frozen in bags or canned in jars.

We mostly eat 'till that particular season of growing is over.

Can't tell you how many bags of mystery veggies or crowder peas/beans have been tossed due to having been burind in the chest freezer and forgotten.

and for all the cabbages? My hubby's aunt makes sour karut. I tried a sorry attempt last winter and ended up ruining 4 great heads of cabbage. it stunk up the house pretty badly too. For all the fermenting and fretting, think i'll just continue to buy from the store or offer to buy some from the aunt.

Hey Anna! I live in Georgia and my garden is kapput! I want to plant something for fall. I love collards and that stuff but have never planted it. I was trying to find some kind of chart that said what could be planted in the fall but so far, haven't found one. I hear you can freeze that stuff.

Thank God I live in the country!

Well,

For YEARS, hubby and his family have consistently planted to excess. They still talk of picking buckets of cucumbers, corn and okra . The grandmother has been dead now for over 20 years, and she was the one who canned.

I also can, but not absoutly out of necessity. The Depression Era mentality is lost to some degree but tradition still carries on.

Other members swing by throughout the year and take what's offered.

We do sell some of what is grown, but never all of what's been planted. Sometimes you never know what's going to make.

Some years ago, hubby bought 600 collard plants!!! And yes, all were done by hand. Talk about a sore behind after 2 hours of bending and squatting. That year we sold quite a few. End of the season though, we ended up donating about half to the local soup kitchen. They went FAST!
