This is so dumb.... I was at a roadside stand the other day that was advertising "Tennessee Tomato's". So I bit and bought some. They were the tastiest, delectable tomatos I've personally ever ate. I could live on these things. Delicious. So I call the owners to ask what type of tomato's they are and they wont tell me. Something about the guy they get them from (in Tenn) made them sign a contract that they aren't to give any info... blah, blah, blah... I'm thinking I could go into "super mom mode" and demand they tell me what kind they are as I want to to know what my family is putting in their mouths, but I wasn't feeling crabby enough. I asked if they were hybrids or heirlooms. All I was told it was a "commercial strain..." So the big question: What exactly ARE Tennessee tomatos and where can I get more? Or seed? I was serious about saving those seeds! I would love to trade you for them. All you have to do is dry them on a paper plate, after dry, put them in an envelope! I'll even offer up $$$$.....cum on....please...(that's my best grovel)...you made them sound soooooo goooood!

I saw them here last year at roadside stand. I never did get any. This year i never saw them advertised.

HAHAHAHA! Alright! I'll be careful! Just had another Mountain Fresh tomato.....wondering if that osnt the one. It was like eating candy it was soo sweet. I had it with cottage cheese. I could live on sweet corn, cantaloupe, maters and cottage cheese!

Be carefull saving seeds....it's contagious! I started out the exact same way...beautiful heirlooms from "Emeril" at the grocery store...I paid $5.00 for each tomato....needless to say, they were the best, so I saved the seeds, now I'm in my 3rd year....over 100 plants....and a garden over 5000sq ft! If you want to trade some seeds, let me know!

I know there is not a strain called TN tomatos. That would be too easy! They were larger than a handful. Not too meaty, but not too seedy/juicy. Red. I did save some seed and will try it next Spring. I have 3 heirloom varieties here at home and none of them taste similiar. I will keep looking and taste testing! Thank you!

I just checked the Totally Tomatoes seed catalog. They have more tomato varities than you want to know. There was no Tennessee Tomatoes in their catalog. So Dawn, what kind of tomato was it? Yellow? Red? Big? Little? Did you save the seeds??? |

my guess is that they were just regular tomatoes imported from Tennessee. Tennessee's number one fruit agricultural product is the tomato. They are well known for their flavor. The term "commercial strain" just sounds tome like they were grown specifically for the commercial market. Because it is such a large cash crop for the state - many are "bred" to be blight resistant and resistant to other diseases.
