Hello everyone,
I bought some beautiful cockscomb at the farmers market this morning and I would love to dry it. Do I need to do anything special? Hang it upside down? Any advice appreciated!
Thanks
~Kimberly W from Ohio

received your email Kimberly. I'd be more than delighted to try growing some of these. It has been years since I have tried growing any of those. my mom bought me a plant of them way back when I was a little girl..and I was so fascinated with it..oh gosh..I must have been about 4 or 5. now..I hardly ever see them at the nurseries around here and when I do they are a different variety(an upright stalk, not the actual cockscomb looking type) and the ones I see here are usually straggly in the nurseries. So..to be able to actually try to grow them again would definitely be a like a little walk down memory lane.

Kimberly, I have dried cockscomb. I cut it on a dry day, and I hung it upside down from the rafters in the barn or garage but first I put it in a bag that will catch all the seeds that will fall out of it...good for seeds next year. The many seeds will make a mess under where you hang them. Keep it dry and dark until dried and then you can use it in wreaths or flower arrangements. One year I tied a bunch together at the stems, tied a florist bow and added in small gourds, indian corn, and some grasses and it was beautiful that fall by our fireplace. I also had read somewhere to spray with a hairspray and I think that helped to bring out the colors.
i tried to find seeds this spring but couldn't fine the nice big cockscombs that I like...so hang on to your seeds! Hope this helps, good luck.
