I love it when I see stories like this...

Today, the Philadelphia Inquirer published a story in the home and design section about kitchen gardens, and more specifically, front yard kitchen gardens. It also talked about this idea/campaign to get the next president to grow a kitchen garden on the lawn at the White House. Yeah, I don't know if that idea will really fly, but I signed the online petition anyway!! Thought you other farmgirls might enjoy reading the story...

Hey Lisa: Hoorah for the chickens. I was given 3 chickens and a rooster by a neighbor. Of course, you don't need the rooster for eggs. Anyway, my point for this was....nothing better than fresh eggs. The yolks are much more yellow. Not those plain things you buy from the market. Enjoy your chickies..... :)

Thank God I live in the country!

Lisa-

Your place sounds fantastic! I too feel the need to help teach others the benefits of gardening.

I am going to do a big garden next year "in ground" and then I am also going to do a bunch of container gardening in the front. I am going to grow tomatoes in pots and do some salad pots as well.

I would love to see a huge organic garden at the White House! It sure would send a positive message to the rest of the country!

Thanks girls...I just signed up too! I've been so motivated and inspired by the RNC that I was thinking that I need to get more involved with my community. I need to organize a group here that can teach others how to have victory gardens. Mine is huge, 5000sq ft, but it started out small.
I'm branching out to livestock... My hubby just brought home lumber to build a chicken coop!I'm so excited to try fresh eggs!
I am a city girl (San Francisco), that moved out to the country 3 yrs ago. I work full time, and still manage the garden. If I can do it, everyone can. There is something so magical about nurturing your crops, then enjoying the harvest, and best of all...sharing with your neighbors and friends.
I plan to map out a plan of attack, and then get out there. I have no idea where to start....but I'll think about it while I'm diggin' in the dirt! Thanks for the added inspiration...LisaLu...

Wow Jennifer, what a great thing to be involved in. It must be so rewarding to see the students learn and realize that you're making an impression on them that they'll remember their whole lives.

When the article first came out I tried to check the Kitchen Gardeners International site, but it was down or something. I just checked it out a bit today and it seems like there could be a wealth of info there. Happy harvest and have a great school year!

Thanks for the link! I LOVE this idea! I went to the site and read about it, and signed the petition.

I am partial, though. I help run the organic community garden at the school where I teach. We sell some produce which goes back to the garden for supples, but most of it gets donated to our regional food bank. So far this year we have donated well over 1,000 pounds of produce (and the winter squash isn't even in yet)!

The students learn so much from being involved in this, and I think it would be such a good example for them to see a vegetable garden being used at the White House!
