Can I cut back the day lilly's leaves? Or do they need the leaves to take in the sun to do what it does.? They really look straggly. I am not much of a flower person as you can tell. They look bad but I don't want to kill the plant.

I work at Morton Arboretum as a volunteer, last week we cut all the daylilies that were blooming to the ground. Daylilies are quite hardy, so if you don't need the green foliage, then it's okay to cut them completely down. Home here, I like the green leaves and they don't have any diseases, so I leave them be until the frost zaps them.

That's always been one of my favorite things about this forum, too, Belle. It seems like there's always someone with an answer to any question I ask. :D
Also - You might want to remove any seed pods that form on the canes(while they are still green, they usually form green pods that have seed in them). The plant uses a lot of energy making the seeds that could be going into making the plant stronger. I usually cut the canes(when I have time) as low as I can, even before they turn brown.

Thanks Janice, I love this forum. I ask a question, go out and cut okra, plant my peas, come bake in and here is my answer. Thanks again.

Belle- remove any dead(brown/yellow) leaves and any dead flower canes. But as long as the leaves are green, let them stay.
