This is the first year I've planted beans (pole and bush varieties). I notice that after picking ripe beans, my hands and forearms sting and itch. It's very unpleasant. I have to wash up in the sink right afterward. My husband says he's experienced this too. Have you? What's the workaround? I don't like the idea of wearing gloves and long sleeves outside in August! |

I was bummed that they're out of all the pretty colored ones. Something for the spring 2009 wish list. I have a couple of pairs of the shorter ones, and have given them as gifts, too. They're really nice. They remind me of the little stretchy cotton gloves I wore to church when I was a little girl, in the ancient of days. |

Hey, Lisa, that sounds like good idea. I'll give it a try. I wonder why they don't mention this in vegetable gardening books. If it's a common problem, you'd think they would mention it, and offer solutions, or that the seed companies would sell some kind of elbow-high summer-weight gloves for this. Hey, girls! An etsy idea! Do "Foxgloves" one better, and make "Harvest Hands." BTW, if you don't know about Foxgloves, you should. They're really nice. ps: I just went to the Foxgloves site and found out they have elbow-high gloves ("Fogloves Elle")! Unfortunately, they're sold out of all but the black ones. |

I've had the same problem with my pole beans, Rosemary! I thought it was just me, though--my skin is very sensitive. After I come in, I wash well with lavender soap, and dry off with soft towels and that seems to soothe it.

I've had that problem with cucumber plants. I wear long sleeves now, anyway. But I have seen people use plain cotton gloves and a half sleeve thing they make from an old pair of knee/tube socks that they cut the toe out of. Slip them on, pick away, slip them off. Maybe that would work for you?

I get this from squash and zuchinni. I have never grown beans though.
