We planted large sunflowers. They are now drooping, and dying. How do I dry the seeds to plant for next year. Do I just cut the seeds out, or do I have to dry the sunflower, then take the seeds out. Any advice would be appreciated. |

marly .. i'm watching mine carefully too for the time to cut. i have made a BIG decision .. to never plant them where i can't STAKE or TIE them to a support .. cuz' i have two multi-flowered very tall plants that have toppled over .. i do see seeds in it .. i'm going to try to 'stake' it .. and if that doesn't work .. i'll jus' let it 'do it's thing' until i think the seeds are mature.
like lisa said .. i just cut mine and hang them upside down to dry .. and they look GREAT while doing this .. only DON'T put them anywhere that MICE can get to them .. YUMM!!!
i usually wait until springtime to take them down (oh make sure where you hang them it stays pretty DRY) .. gloves are a good idea .. i've also discovered that if i use a spoon (upside down) or some other tool .. i can 'de-seed' them pretty quickly. i package them up in little gift bags cuz' they make wonderful little prizes for loved ones ... i have sunflower 'babies' growing all over the country .. and mine started out from seeds from my north carolina gurlfrenz' momma's garden! xo

If the back of the sunflower is yellow, cut the head off the plant and hang it in a dry, airy place out of the sun. After the whole head is dry, it's much easier to remove the seeds with leather gloves.
