Posted - Jul 25 2008 : 11:10:51 AM Wow! Wednesday the 23rd I arrived home from studying abroad in Mexico. Yesterday I went down to check on my large garden (my dad was tending it while I was away) and I saw the devastation!!! It was so hard to tell what I planted and what were weeds! How horrible! Apparently, my dad had just been watering it and had not weeded at all, nor had my sisters! Anyways, I looked trough the entire garden and found that I was abe to harvest some wonderful green leafy lettuce and also broccoli! The broccoli was almost to the point of not being able to be harvested but I caught it right in time and the buds were not opened. Some even look like normal broccoli sold at the stores! This was my first harvest of anything other than herbs! It all tasted completely wonderful! I had a great salad last night and every one enjoyed it!

Posted - Jul 26 2008 : 07:56:46 AM It sure is hard when parents don't look after things as well as we expect -- remember when they were all-knowing and possessed of amazing powers? :-) I'm glad you were able to "weed through the weeds" to get at some crops to harvest. Good luck getting rid of all those weeds before (I hope) they set seed. You might need to put down weed barriers next year to prevent them from crowding out your veggie seedlings. Chelsey, your kitchen must smell fabulous -- bread and fresh veggies...yum! |

Posted - Jul 25 2008 : 11:41:37 PM Oh yes...it all tastes better from your own garden for sure. I will have mostly tomatoes, peppers and cukes this year..but I am happy to have them. I have had some mixed lettuce going that won't be much more since it has been so hot. I have sure enjoyed the salads though!! And my walla walla onions will be added to the salsa I will can. I didn't grow broccoli this year ..first time in years..isn't it wonderful..after that first main head of it I love all the little side headlets you get later...so fresh and yummy. Gosh..I should have planted some!!! I need to do some weeding too!

Posted - Jul 25 2008 : 3:09:50 PM Yes, I need to go out there SOON! I am going to weed like crazy tomorrow because I have loads of time! I have been baking a cake and three loaves of bread today! The bread is rising for the second time right now as I type...I love baking bread but it takes so long. Oh well, I love the whole process!
Thanks to both of you for the congratulations...and yes, it does taste better to eat your own harvest!

Posted - Jul 25 2008 : 2:56:59 PM Congrats on the garden, Chelsey. I just finished weeding yesterday. Last night the armadillos dug up all around where I weeded. I'm going to sit out tonight on a hunt. LOL Marly |
