My strawberry beds are being overrun with babies! I dug all the babies out of the one bed I have here at home this spring and planted them in 4 new beds at our farmgirl's garden. Every single bed, including the one here, is just spilling over with babies! I planned to put in another bed here at home that I was not going to allow to reproduce and just keep the old bed as a baby factory, so I'll always have young plants to replace plants that get too old.
I've asked several people if they want any for free, but so far everybody already has all they want. I thought about giving them away to you gals, but how would I ship them to you in good shape?
I need some ideas. I just can't bring myself to kill them. I suppose I could just plant some out in the forest and let the birds, squirrels and deer have them. Otherwise, I don't know what to do with all of them.

Lisa; The strawberry babies arrived yesterday and are now tucked into a planter box. In a few weeks when they send out some roots and the temperature has cooled down they will go into the garden. They looked great after the trip with only a few that turned a little soggy and brown - the rest were very healthy. Thanks for sharing. Sage :)

Christina, you are so welcome. Boy, I am so glad they bounced back from their traumatic trip. I was worried after you said they were all dried out. Your blog is very nice. The berry plants appear to be happy there.
The ones I was sending to Sage dried out and looked dead before I even shipped it off to her. So, I put some new ones into a ziploc baggie with a little water and air. Kind of like a square balloon with plants and water floating around in it. Now, we'll see how hers arrive. Hopefully they don't drown during their trip.
To expand your berry patch, you could allow a plant or two to produce babies and cut ALL runners off the rest of your plants so they concentrate only on producing berries instead of babies.

Hey there Lisa Marie! Thanks again for the wonderful little babies. I got them "planted" in an old roaster and after giving them an overnight soak they seemed ok. The one bunch that still looked near perfect was actually starting to root into the paper towel it was wrapped in. If you want to see them planted and in the window just check out my blog.

Alee, I gave away a good 80 or so yesterday to some guys at the sheriff's office and the recorders office. And those came only from the one bed here at home. I still have 3 1/2 beds full of babies at our farmgirl's garden. I have plenty to send you gals a few dozen each.

The price went up? Dang it, I can't keep up with all the price hikes. If you gals want to send a check or money order (I don't have a paypal account yet) I will package them up this weekend. Most of the babies don't really have roots yet even though they are good size. I'm thinking Tina's suggestion of wrapping strips of paper towels around where the roots would be, and then in plastic wrap, all tied up with string and packed in newspaper; they should be ok for a few days. NE, WY and MT...You gals should get the package fast enough, I think. You're not that far away.
Just make sure you have enough space or you'll be in the same boat I'm in with OVER abundance! I just can't get over how fast they have grown. Must have been all the rain we got this spring. Email me if you need my address. I'll need yours, too.

Lisa - If you can ship them, I'd love some strawberry plants. When the stores get them in they are packed with the roots in a damp mossy type material in a plastic bag and a rubber band around the bag just below the leaves to keep the moisture in. Then everything is packed into a box to protect the plants. I have some of the garden crystals if you like to try that idea. Sage :)

Hmmmm. I don't have enough space here to do a u-pick project. I'll have to talk to the gal who donated our farmgirl garden space and see if she has enough space at her nursery to do something like that.
Good ideas, Tina. Ok, so it might be possible to ship them safely. I could probably squeeze 2 or 3 dozen into those flat-rate $8 boxes at the post office. Anybody want any?

hmm..start a u pick strawberry farm.:0) couldn't you?
just an idea.
of course depends on how much land you have, but you could create hills to plant them in..totally weed block everything...and run your drip itrrigation/soaker irrigation piping up under the plastic weed block...then set in the plants....there is a u-pick farm here..that does things that way..all the rows are set with a weed block fabric..heavy black plastic..and up under the plastic the soaker hoses/drip irrigation runs right next to the hills.
Every year they set out about 5,000 plants on 5 acres..by hand.
then come Feb/March they open up the farm for a u-pick..they do pretty good at it too.

well about sending them in the mail..I think you'd have to make sure that the roots stay somewhat moist..maybe little baggies attached with string right up to the stem part of the plant..keep the roots in the bag but wrap them with a bit of damp paper towelling.
then use shredded newspapers as your packing...put the little baby plantlets with the little baggies and all into toilet paper tubes to keep them from getting crushed.you should be able to get 2 baby plantlets put into the tube..root end to root end ..in their little baggy holders.
gently slide them into the tissue roll.
I think that would be a good sturdy way to send them.
If they are going a long way...try buying some of the little polymer crystals like what they use in potted plants(you know the baby diaper looking stuff?) put a few granules of that in amongst the paper towel wrapping and get it moist) Then same thing..into the baggie and tie with a little string or twisty tie then into the tube to protect the green leaves.
