Just bought a vigoro soaker hose, thinking I was buying a recycled product (yay) that would use less water (yay). On the back of the label it said not to drink from the hose, because of lead content. EEE! Does that mean what I think it means??? If my hose leaks lead, this shouldn't be used in my garden, should it? If my thinking is right, shouldn't this have a great big warning on it "Leaks Lead on your Veggies"? Or am I being an alarmist? Any reassurance out there? I saved my receipt.

Well, I'll be darned! Most hoses have lead, eew. I'll have to see if I can find info. about edible plants taking up lead? I'd like to trust hose-makers and regulators not to put something out there that would harm us, but there is a certain amount of responsibility we have to take to inform ourselves. I can't seem to find much information about this. Maybe I should buy a potable hose and "fork" it into a soaker? I'll have to see what else I can "dig up".

If the hoses say "for use with potable water" or "Drink safe hose" then they are lead free, or that is what I have heard.

Most hoses have lead in them. SUPPOSEDLY they are safe to water a garden with but the FDA does recommend that you do not use hoses with lead to water pets, fill pools or to allow children to drink or play in the water from them. You can buy lead free hoses but they are hard to find. It will say "Lead Free" on the label.

You know, I bought two smaller hoses to extend from the rain barrels that we have, one for each side of the house, and the packaging said the same darn thing. I took those back pronto. We were using the hoses to water the garden, so I'm thinking, "no lead in my garden!"
Mary Jane suggests a brand that I can't think of to save my life...don't know if it's lead free, but I'd hope so. Maybe someone at the farm can help.
