I planted my strawberries but they are only producing these odd little strawberries that are little ovals...about the length from the tip of my pinkie finger to the first knuckle and not a wide. What is wrong with my strawberries? Too much water? Too Little? Not enough pollination?

ya know Alee if it is like most plants..take for instance lilies, and ivy plants and so forth..they all do best by the 3rd yr.
but..I'm crossing my fingers too that my strawberry plants start producing better next year also..instead of having to wait 3 yrs.

I couldn't pluck the flowers off! I know you should...but I want Strawberries! LOL I assume the plant will mature anyway?

Mine did this. Our extension service has a call in center and they said to pluck the blossoms off the first year, maybe two. Also, that every seed on the blossom has to be pollinated for it to produce a full size berry. If your pollinators aren't present you won't get a good harvest.
I didn't have a single berry on my plants this year. They were all this shriveled up weird looking things. I luckily have a friend with tons of them.

Cold nights when the plants flower will cause the fruit to be small and misshapen as well.

They sound immature to me. Just new plant berries. They will get bigger unless they are true alpines or wild berries, which are small anyway. They sound lovely anyway =)

try a variety called "fern" if you can get them. we get huge berries after the first picking in the first year!

when planting strawberry starts, you should pluck the flowers off for the first two years...after that, year 3, the plant will produce large healthy looking berries. :) |

usualy our first berries are fairly small, but not tiny, and as the season progresses they get bigger. its a good thing that doesnt happen with our strawberries as we have to treat them as anuals! i havent had any over winter, but then with temps to 50 below and the strawberries in a box (or swimming pool) on a pallet its not surprising *grin* |

I'm not sure. I've had that happen the first year after planting in the spring and I always thought it was a transplant shock thing. When I transplant them in the fall, they don't seem to do that the following spring. If the leaves are green and healthy looking, the plants should be fine. I hate to say, wait and see, but I think that's all you can do for now.
