I hope I'm not asking goofy questions today(!), but how do you plant a strawberry plant? I know the seeds are on the berry itself.. so would planting the berry work? If not, How do you harvest the seeds then? What works?

plant each set 12"-18" apart this is to give the runners space. With strawberry plants you have to be carefull not to plant them too deep or too shallow. Remember too that you should pluck the flowers off the first two years for a healthy berry. It is worth the wait and your mature plant will have a higher yield. |

Alee, they might send out runners before snow flies, but not a lot as they are newly planted. Next summer, you should have plenty of babies and, like spider plants, they will root wherever they rest. You can cut them from the mother plant just like you do with spider plants and stick them in fine dirt with plenty of compost and keep well watered until their roots develop. Also, some varieties are better at sending out runners than others. I had ordered mine 3 years ago and purposely picked a variety that said it "readily reproduced" so I could start small (cheap) and gain more over time. And boy, howdy, these strawberry plants send out tons of runners. My little bed is spilling over with babies! I think the variety I got was Tristar Everbearing.

Hey Strawberry Expert Lisa!
I just bought my plants this year, they lived for a few months getting big in a pot, moved to Montana, got stuck in the ground and now they seam happier than ever (and bigger too!) So when should I expect them to start sending out runners? I would love to double or even triple my strawberry plants.
Also how is the best way to separate the strawberry runner from the mother plant?

Strawberry plants send out runners that have babies on them. Those are what you would plant and like Miss Wilma said, don't bury the crown. I have babies by the hundreds this year and I have to build another strawberry bed to put them in. Then I plan to have the new bed just produce the berries and not allow babies to develop and just keep the smaller, old bed as the baby factory! Hoping to get that done before snow flies.

they have to be grown from plant sets. bareroot plants are best. i harvested almost a quart today! this is really early strawberries for interior alaska. peace connie in alaska |
