I thought I would post first here before I call a stranger to collect a swarm of honeybees in my hedge. If there is a Oregon farm girl out there that is a bee keeper and near the Portland area I have a healthy swarm of honeybees that have set up shop in our hedge. I thought they would have moved on, but they like the hedge and have started making honey combs. If there is a farm girl out there that would like to collect these, just send me an e-mail. They have been in the hedge about a week and really should be collected by someone that will take care of them.

Well the bee keeper just left. Nice guy, said we had Italian bees - very healthy about 15,000 in all. He put almost the whole swarm into a new hive. There are a few still flying around which sadly will die off now that the queen is gone. But I am happy I found someone to take them and keep them healthy. The bees had even started making honey, we tried a bit off of one of the combs, but it was nasty - real bitter. One the bees leave the combs that the beekeeper left behind he said I can melt them down and use them for candles or something. Sorry, forgot to take picture, but it was very cool.

Tina -

Funny you mention the Oregon Bee Keepers Association, just got off that sight with a list of names to call.

I'll let you know how it works out.

By the way I just kept the neighbor from trimming the hedge (really it is his hedge, bees are just on our side). He said he will wait till I have the bees removed.

You would be amazed at how many people do not understand the "birds and bees" so to speak. I explained to her that it is like sex in your yard - with the bee being the active individual in the affair

Oh my gosh! When we were in grade school we did a whole study chapter on pollination. Do people forget or perhaps their schools never taught them how pollination works?

I am glad you are taking care of the bees and looking out for a steward for them. I hope one falls into your lap soon! :D

This is why I am looking for a Farm Girl to do the job. Since honeybees are so valuable now, I don't want these little guys hurt. It is kinda cool to watch them make their wax combs and begin to build a hive - but it really is in the wrong place since we have to trim the hedge every year. I will definitely interview the bee keeper if I end up going with a stranger.

I have to admit I gave a co-worker a bit of an education on honey bees and their recent plight. She made the comment, why don't I just hose them down or kill them and I was shocked. They I told her of the value of bees and pollination, which she had no clue. Apparently she thought the pollen went from plant to plant on their own and we didn't need the bees to produce fruit and vegetables. I then showed her the Hagen Daez sight where they are donating ice cream proceeds to find a cure.

Oh well, I am sure I will find someone to take the bees.

We once had a swarm set up housekeeping between the studs of an addition we were building. We called beekeepers and found one who said he wouldn't harm the bees. We were totally shocked and angry when we found him hanging up one of those insect killing strips..... So if you call a beekeeper keep a sharp eye on him. Honey bees are too valuable to kill.

Anne, How awesome.. We had a swarm 2 years ago and it was so great to watch the beekeeper come and gather them up and give them safe home.. Hope you find one too..
