My dad, a gifted blacksmith, makes these neat "flower pot lifts" and I thought you all might enjoy reading about them. I bet you could find something similar in your neck of the woods if you keep an eye out. They just add a lil' height and a lotta character. Endless possiblities! Thanks, there, handy helper Gabe :-) I'll take a hammer to my bucket to see if I can flatten out its bottom. Even if I'm successful, though, I'm sure it's destined to be a flower pot! Now where'd my husband leave my drill.....?
Farmgirl sisters, married ones, is it like this for you, too? Before I got married, I always knew where the scissors were. *sigh*

Hi Rosemary - so happy you liked everything! Honestly, a bucket is my favorite thing to plant in - I'll take it over a regular pot any day. I simply turn the bucket upside down and drill about three holes in the bottom for drainage. Be careful when filling with dirt because you will have some sharp points in the bottom from the drilling. I don't use any type of pebbles - I like for the flowers to have all the room to grow that they can. Just keep it watered well, buckets have a tendency to draw a lot of heat, obviously because they are metal. Look around at garage sales and flea markets for buckets or enamelware already with holes in the bottom due to rust. They may be useless to others but perfect for us gardeners! And by the way, if you still have your bucket with the "bulging" bottom - turn it over and beat it back in with a hammer - It works - I've done it several times myself.  Happy Planting!!!! Cathy, I love your father's "flower pot lift," but your bucket flower pot is terrific. Did you put all the soil right in the pot, or is there a layer of pebbles and another pot inside, or did you have to punch holes in the bucket for drainage or something? I would love to do the same thing with a bucket I can't much use since I let water freeze in it one year and the bottom bulged out. There's a shepherd's crook at the end of our long driveway that would be perfect to hang the bucket from. |
