Posted - Mar 20 2008 : 07:24:28 AM Hello Ladies, Since My husband and I have moved on to our new farm we have just started to think about the 2 raised beds that are near the house. I know that they were used for veggies but, I am not sure how long that was. Just wanting to know what I need to do to get them ready to plant? I am wanting to plant veggies....And I need help about planting strawberry plants in a container... Thanks, Deborah

Posted - Mar 20 2008 : 08:52:01 AM Raised beds are wonderfull. They are really simple to prepare and easy to grow in
1. Clean out all of the weeds and growth 2. Add some compost and/or manure to the existing soil. This will replace nutrients that may have been lost. 3. PLANT and enjoy
We used existing beds for several years. There are a few tips I found helpful 1. Plant vining plants on the corners or edges of the beds. This way they will grow over the edges of the bed and not take over the center. 2. On the back side or ends of the bed you can grow climbing plants. Snap peas ( early season), pole beans ( later season). Just put a simple climbing trellis right next to the bed. We used a few old poles stuck in the groud with rope strung between them. 3. The center of beds can have tomatoes, broccoli, cabbage, what ever you want. 4 I used a bed for herbs and fruit and another for veggies.
Hope this helps!

Posted - Mar 20 2008 : 07:26:21 AM Hey Deborah, see the post below about "new garden"...there's plenty of info about raised beds, and also a link. I did one last year and had great success. We're building another this year as well. Good luck!
