Posted - Feb 22 2008 : 2:02:09 PM I was granted the day off from work today as a freebie for working last Saturday at a trade show, and luck has it the weather is quite nice. Was suppose to rain, but so far just been a threat with some sun. So...I went out into my backyard to fill bird feeders and take note of what I am to prune and fertilize over the next day or so when I noticed that I have holly hocks coming up. I had planted some seed last May/June in a corner of the veggie garden. The seed came from Aunt Jenny a couple of years ago and was misplaced, but then found. Nothing really happened last year, the plants came up, but only grew a small bit. I assumed that was it and I was not to see anything else. Boy was I wrong - there are four hardy little plants coming up - so I am hopeful that I will see holly hocks this summer Also my peonies are busting the ground along with early tulips and daffodils. I do have a few crocuses blooming and expect more over the next couple of weeks. I am anxious for spring and flowers - can not wait.

Posted - Feb 26 2008 : 4:50:04 PM Today, while driving thru the parking lot at the PO, there were all these little mounds of dirt and wood chips mulch. Up from these mounds are coming bunches of daffodils. Another week and it will be full bloom around here! Sharon

Posted - Feb 26 2008 : 12:04:55 PM I have really been bitten by spring fever!! Two days in a row I planted a flat of seeds for seedlings. Tomatoes, peppers, basil, cilantro, brocolli and acorn squash so far! I just can't wait!! Not much room to plant veggies at this house we bought last winter, but I will find spots to stick them in between existing plantings! Then theres a whisky barrel on the patio - maybe I"ll use that for my herbs.

Posted - Feb 26 2008 : 11:42:17 AM Yesterday, before we were hit with another snowstorm, I saw my irises and dianthus are turning green. It was nice to know that spring may actually show up sometime this year for us! Right now it looks like a beautiful winter wonderland. Very pretty to look at, but to be honest, I'm tired of the view!

Posted - Feb 26 2008 : 08:36:05 AM The sun was out until 6pm yesterday Yahoo!!!!
Finally had a chance to walk around the yard to see what was going on and things are definetly happening. A few daffodils are coming up in the back and the one's in the front are already blooming - strange. I saw little shoots on the berry bushes and my snowball bush, planted last fall, is starting to bud.
The seeds I planted didn't show signs of coming up, but it may be a bit too chilly for them right now. DD doesn't have any shows this weekend so I'm in the yard for two whole days. I think I'll plant some cool crop veggie seeds and check out the nursery for tomato plants. I never have luck starting them from seed. Prune some of my trees and grape vines and work the beds for more veggie plantings.
I spent a rainy January day sorting my seed packets and getting them all organized, then filled in what I needed. So now I'm ready to go - time and weather permitting. |

Posted - Feb 25 2008 : 07:51:57 AM I'm glad you had good snug boots, Alee. Too bad your friend didn't. Don't worry, Jonni, I'm sure spring will happen before you know it.

Posted - Feb 25 2008 : 07:19:10 AM AGGGGHH! We're still iced in and it snowed ALL day yesterday! I placed my order for my seeds last week, but geez. I don't think Spring will EVER get here! This time last year, I had my garden design planned, soil ordered for delivery etc....doesn't appear that's going to happen this year.

Posted - Feb 25 2008 : 06:49:29 AM Lisa- I was lucky and didn't lose my boots because they were nice and snug on my legs. My friend Jael wasn't so lucky- She stepped into a mud hole and lost her boots. It was mud caused by snow melt, so I don't think any of use would have gone barefoot! :D

Posted - Feb 24 2008 : 11:18:38 AM I have seen robins and the fields that have the winter wheat are green already with more growth.
Yesterday I slogged through, not exaggerating at all, knee high mud helping to carry 6 foot by 5 foot horse run panels. from the first barn to the third barn. We moved 6 panels plus a gated panel. I had mud all the way up to my bottom after we were done- and I didn't even fall down!
Yup! It is spring alright, aka MUD SEASON! LOL

Posted - Feb 24 2008 : 10:49:52 AM I am so jealous we are still under tons of snow. The pile of snow in my back yard it 13 feet tall and 25 feet long. Can not even see the neighbors behind us. That Ok though make us more secluded.

Posted - Feb 24 2008 : 10:05:20 AM I shoveled the 4 feet of snow off my south-facing flower bed yesterday to find new daffodil shoots already coming up! I have crocus and tulips in that bed, too, but they weren't showing anything yet. Now that I got all that snow off of them, I'm sure they'll be up soon, though.
I was really amazed at how tenacious bulbs are. That snow had to weigh a ton (it sure felt like it as I shoveled) and yet with all that weight on them, they still pushed up through. They're just amazingly determined little buggers.

Posted - Feb 23 2008 : 08:41:52 AM This is the nice thing about living in western Oregon - after about the 15th of February the chances of snow or freezing rain in the valley drops tremendously. We still have rain, but the temperature starts to level out in the mid 50's, sometimes we hit 60 early - but usually it is a gradual warm up and by March we have daffodils and hyacinths and in April tulips, etc. Today is beautiful - so I will be out pruning and starting winter clean up. Should be interesting on what else I find "popping" up.
