I've never planted any of the 3 mentioned above because since moving back to the country and into an old home we had them already growing in our backyard. Apparently this is where my great grandfather's garden was. We are moving within the next 2 months to our own farm. I would like to dig them up and take them with me but I'm not sure when to plant them. My grandfather always plants green onions in the fall (we are in North Louisiana) but he never finishes telling me when, how, and when I'm suppose to dig them up to dry for the next season. He always gets off on another subject. LOL! So my questions are:
1. when do I plant them?
2. can I leave them in the ground year round so they will multiply like bulbs?
3. when do I harvest the shallots & garlic?
I'm assuming I plant them in the fall at least this is what I have read thus far.
Thanks so much!

This last fall (2004) was my first attempt to grow garlic. Since then I have read a lot on organic garlic and the best growing methods. I have found the following website to be a wonderful bank of knowledge, I hope it helps. http://www.gourmetgarlicgardens.com/growing.htm
